(I just realized this about an hour ago.) Back when I first brought Artie home and hadn't found this forum yet, I bathed him. He hadn't wiped well, and smelled like pee. So I thought I would make him smell good with this woodsy-smelling shower gel I had that was full of essential oils like oakmoss, lemon balm, white horehound and patchouli. He, of course hated the whole process, poor guy. It's a wonder he didn't leave claw marks up and down my arm. He's such a sweetie. This may account for his sudden change (mellowing) in behavior instead of the change in diet. I have since bathed him once with a lanolin, scent free baby shampoo, and now occasionally get him a little wet when he pees where he can't wipe. So, the question is, since it was an external exposure, does the skin absorb it into the system, or does it wear off like other scents? And, yes, I get the dummy award for that one.

i would not really worry. i have seen many "ferret shampoos" that contain either eucalyptus or tea tree oil! and one of them is Marshalls. surprise surprise. if you are really worried, give him another bath with johnsons baby shampoo. then i would not bathe him again for another year! lol. no seriously. they don't need to be bathed that often. Sonny is the biggest SLOB ferret that i've ever met. male ferrets are such pigs! Sonny drags his fat belly across his urine puddles on the newspaper so his belly is always wet with urine! he's on a raw diet so he sometimes gets poop stuck to the hairs around his butthole. I just take a warm washcloth or a baby wipe and I clean his stomach /penis area and his butt.

Will do. That belly dragging thing is annoying. It's like they leave a pee trail so they know you won't miss it. Baby wipe city it is. I hope he doesn't like them too much. I'll have pee trails for days.

How else are they supposed to mark their territory and leave their stink everywhere ;D I will also put about an inch or so of water in the tub, and let them play in that. Does the same thing

I'm working on getting him to like to play in the tub. He plays in his water dish (water everywhere) whenever he wants his dinner, so I figure he's not afraid of water, just the tub.

I used to bathe my ferret with the Aveeno Baby Shampoo, it was supposed to be like, natural oat extract or something? Didn't seem to be problematic.

Boojum, something that may help is to have a towel in the bottom of the tub. That way he has more solid footing under him.

oooh the towel is a good idea. Although I think I'm done with baths unless for some reason it is absolute necessary. I find dipping baby wipes in warm water works just as well, and it isn't nearly as stressful for them.

The towel is magic for Artie. I or someone else did a number on his fondness for water baths. Teddy, he's pretty fearless about it. He has stuck his head under the running drizzle in the bathtub before, so an inch of fert temp water would probably be a blast for him. They both ask to be put in the tub when I'm in the bathroom.

Vincent used to get into the empty tub and flat ferret. He'd look from me, to the faucet, to the drain, and back to me again ;D He loved playing in the water.

All mine love playing in the shower with me, not all at once of course, if one of the dirty males need a quick wash, I can pick them up and quickly wash & rinse.

I gave up on showering with ferrets. They decided my feet needed some serious nipping as soon as my head was full of shampoo

Well... progress. The heat has convinced Artie that snorkeling is a good idea. The big casserole dish I'm using for a watering trough probably helped move things along. I am extremely happy about this, because I am fairly certain that my oakmoss bath was the trauma that made him scared of baths. He still needs the towel in the bathtub and lots of coaxing though. Strangely, I accidentally flooded the kitchen today and he came and got me and proceeded to hop from towel to towel in the middle of the floor. Got himself stranded on a soggy towel island and fertmom had to rescue him.
Teddy will take a quick shower with me now. He doesn't snorkel though. At least not while I'm around.
I am shopping for portable AC's, since summer has decided to come around. I've discovered that there's not enough coolness in the boy's room!
