Yes, heart is rich in taurine. All meat contains taurine- the darker the meat, the more taurine. You can't really overdose on taurine so adding extra heart a couple times a week just makes sure they're getting enough.

Have you checked with the butcher at your grocery store? Mine doesn't display heart but when I asked the butcher he sold me whole beef hearts he had in the back.

yeah they wont sell it because they arent usda approved and it is a felony. of course my butcher is an actual butcher shop. bring in a live animal get a dead one cut up and returned

Hm that's odd. I would have thought a private butcher was exempt from the USDA standards. I mean if you take your own animal in to be butchered, it won't be USDA approved. But I don't really understand how it works

So what do they do with it? Throw it out?

That's true. If they're just throwing it away they could probably give it to you for free. I can't see that being against the law. If you're buying other things from them, they may be willing to make a deal with you. Did you tell them the meat isn't for human consumption?

Or if they could tell you "when" and "where" they toss it

That is in the UK. Laws are different in different countries.

pastelsummer, where the heek do you live that they can't sell heart???
afaik, it's considered an organ and, if for sale in a store that sells meats for human consumption (aka grocery store or butcher shop), it doesn't need any usda rating other than that it comes from an animal that is rated for human consumption.
you should easily be able to buy heart (and spleen and brain and and liver and tripe and intestines) in ANY grocery store or butcher shop!!!

Most of the common grocery stores don't carry a variety of organs. Mostly liver and gizzard.

I have a h*ll of a time finding "non-yuppy meats", which is why I feed commercial raw. There is no variety here. -jennifer
