I was curiouse, why do ferrets only catch the flu from us but not a cold?
My ferret has Bronchitis. Apparently it's contagious. Could my fuzzy be passing it back to me? Ever since ive had him hes had bronchitis and ive had a cold on and off. People usually get a cold when they are around me too.
What do you guys think?

Probably has something to do with the two being very different types of viruses. The flu's 10 or so genes work on us and ferrets, but the colds genes likely don't work in a way that effects a ferret based on the way its genes interact with and block it. Or it could be completely inert to the ferret, causing no reaction at all.

My immunity is low lately. I'm guessing i'm going to need antibiotics for my fuzzy and I. Keeping in mind my albino boy seems fine. Has never gotten the sniffles. I hardly see him sneeze and never hear him cough. I guess/hope he has built an immunity up to bronchitis. The old vet I had was giving my sick man fluid medicine that tasted like bananas. He loved it. Made the symptoms go away for a week or so then it would come back. I'm guessing it was just a cough syrupe instead of the right antibiotics.

Ferrets need to be givin antibiotics for 14 days with no missed or skipped doses for them to work right.

Any time mine have had antibiotics, it's more normal to have a course of 7-10 days.

If it's a virus no amount of antibiotics is going to cure it. All viruses must run their course. Antibiotics in those cases may be used to fend off possible progressions of a disease....if an upper respiratory infection has occurred some physicians will give antibiotics to perhaps prevent pneumonia. It often doesn't work and the antibiotics kill off the good bacteria as well, while possibly setting the virus up to create it's own immunities to antibiotics. ciao

while possibly setting the virus up to create it's own immunities to antibiotics. Hadn't even thought of that. It's a very valid point!

Hi heather is correct no amount of antibiotics will fight a virus I would up his good bacteria if he has been near antibiotics ( a spoon full of natural yoghurt will help ) its strange how some ferrets get flu and some don't I honestly think its down to the amount of immunity they build up from an early age the reason I say this is simply my immune system is non existent yet I have been among my guys with flu result I cough and wheeze there fine ! lol its surprising how resilient they are take care bye for now Bev

Kahlua must have a bacterial infection then or is just phenmonia now because he has been sick since I got him in 2009. My young man I am sure built up an immunity to the bronchitis. So I doubt Kahlua has a virus? The sickness has been running it's course for a long time. I even medicated him for a month with no missed doses in 2009.
