Trixie was making some noise in the bathroom. I got up to go investigate and I think I snuck up on her. Well she dashed down the hall screaming and barking extremely loudly. She has NEVER been this vocal. I feel so bad - I didn't mean to scare her. She not a deafie either. She gave me a heart attack when I heard her scream

I've heard ferret screaming and barking at a shelter and it's a pretty scary noise.

My boys don't make many noises, but Riley sure does. She dooks just because she's hopping around...and if you walk toward her she acts terrified of you but will dook haha
Annnyways, when she's in the hall or something I'll go to grab her and she will get startled and make a horrifying scream, like I hurt her. Then she darts away dooking...boy do I have an oddball.
Jackie, I'm sure she was just surprised and overly excited. Hope you made up to her! =]

ok so I seem to have weirdo ferrets! I've neve heard them scream, even my deafies, the most I get out of them is a soft dooking when they are running through their tunnels! The only screams you hear is when Sophie Ann is attacking one of us...dang she bites hard!

I've heard a ferret scream exactly once - it was a blood-curdling, high- pitched noise that just about ripped my ears off.....
It happened when one of my first 2 boys, Sabre, lost his brother Schitzo. I had no idea if I should clean bedding and remove reminders of Schitzo. I left the bedding alone thinking Sabre would still have the comfort of the scent of Schitty so he would not feel so alone.
That worked fine for a couple of days. One day, I returned Sabre to the cages (I had 2 cages connected by a tunnel - both boys usually stayed in the cage closest to the people.) Sabre ran to he far cage as fast as he could, went to the bottom of the far cage and let out this horrible scream. I grabbed Sabie and held him for hours. My husband took over being with Sabre so I could clean up. I cleaned everything as best as humanly possible. I went shopping and bought all new bedding that same day.
Sabre was ready for the change, and he let us know it. That was the only time I have ever heard a true ferret scream. There are fighting noises that are minor outcries, but you WILL know if you hear a true scream - it's horrific!

That fear scream and bark is very loud. That's the scream if you hear, and you don't see the cause or you're not there you run because it means they're really scared or hurt (it's the same sound). Poor Fun-Go, Lady Natasha jumped off the bed on top of him last night. He didn't know that she was there. He screamed bolted, slammed himself under a book shelf and then got stuck. He just kept screaming. He was scared (insult to injury...she bounced around behind him dooking ). It was a good thing he got stuck with his head going "in" under the bookshelf instead of "out". We would have never got him out. You could hear his teeth clicking and smashing together. When I finally did manage to get him out of there....he bit me Once when I got him out of there (did the old exorcist head thing...they really do it well ) and when I dropped him (it wasn't far I was just sitting back on my heals) Bonus....he didn't gator roll when he bit...we are making progress ciao

In spite of the bite- that is an improvement, isn't it? Our first experience with a ferret scream We'd just gotten Lucrezia, she was 13 weeks old. We heard this horrific screaming/shrieking coming from the kitchen. It was heart stopping. We both ran, thinking one of the older ferrets were killing her. What we found was her having a temper tantrum on poor Vincent. She was dragging this much larger ferret by the scruff across the floor, screaming at the top of her lungs all the way- I'd swear she didn't even take a breath What I have never been able to figure out is how they can scream SO loud and long with their mouths absolutely stuffed with something

i have heard that sound. i guess they do it when they are startled. i once dropped a bottle of shampoo on the floor and it made a loud thud. my ferret cosmo was standing nearby and he ran off screaming like a monkey. AHH AHH AHH AHH! it was really loud. it kind of sounded like a parrot shrieking. he once barked at me too because i guess i was playing a little too rough with him. my poor cosmo. i miss him alot.
