They need to be really cheap or free. I don't have money to spend on toys. So far I have lots of tunnels, box full of shredded paper, pillow case full of crumpled up newspaper, small toys to steal, pile of clothes, paper bag, box house, box maze, and fabric cubes.

Can I give them a box full of hay to dig in?

I'm thinking something that some how goes pop, and sends out a toy, but something on it reels it back in timed like and lands back in a box they must pop open. Warning, I don't have details as to how, but don't over do on this toy. It gets irritatingly teasing like.

The thing that would make me hesitant about hay is the amount of dust that's usually in it. One thing I found make mine go bonkers is when I change the position of all their toys ;D Box maze from position A to where the tubes were, tubes to a different room or area, etc.

Before my guinea pig passed I used to throw a handful of nice green Timothy hay to the fuzzies once in awhile... there was only a moderate amount of sneezing

Pickup some toddler's socks. I usually get them at dollar store, good will store, salvation army store.
Then get some easter eggs, pill bottles. Put some pennies, buttons, beans, bells inside the easter eggs or pill bottles. Seal tight.
Then insert item into the toddler's sock. Tie the toddler's sock with a note on top.
I find that toddler socks last longer than the crochet eggs. My kids destroy the crochet eggs in one day. Plus they are not chewing on mom's crochet blankets.
I hope this helps

Thanks everyone. The hay isn't dusty. I think I will give them some. Hopefully they dig in it. The shredded paper quickly turned into a bed

Roll up a rug so it makes a tube. When they climb in it, roll the tube across the floor. Mine loves it, he climbs in and out of it as long as I can roll it.
The rice dig box. Cleans and they can dig and roll to their hearts content.
The box of paper is good, change out the box or the paper, to make it new for them.
Make a fabric tube by sewing the legs of old pants or fabric together. Make it wide enough they can turn around in it. Fold the edges of the ends over, making a cuff, so it's easier to crawl into. You can also play swing the ferret in the tube, they might like it, Artie is indifferent to it. He likes to sleep in it though.
Something similar to a fishing pole. A stick, a cord and a fluffy stuffed toy.
Hours of fun for the whole family.

Sherry is right about the sheet game. I pulled down one of my old sheets and tried to spread it over the floor. Instant ferret fun. He would try to attack the sheet as it came down, then wander around under it, waiting for the next toss of the sheet. Much fun.

And if you've got two people, you can place ferret in the middle, and gently "toss" them up and down ;D It's hilarious!

paper bags....leaving your clothes on the floor, let them help you unpack the groceries, leaving the shoe closet door open (if safe if not take out some shoe and leave for them to explore, move etc), the sheet game is a must (use sheets, tee shirts, sweaters, towels, spice it up...), Put them in a pillow case and spin them around, slide them across the floor (into a clothes pile or teddy bears), unloading the dishwasher (the object of the game they can't enter the dishwasher....who is fastest?!), putting water in the tub with a toy or 2, catch mice in a live trap and release in your house,
i may be out of ideas but if i think of more i will share!

unloading the dishwasher (the object of the game they can't enter the dishwasher....who is fastest?!), They win. Every time Which is just ONE of the reasons mine are never allowed into the kitchen anymore ;D My dad had to modify the baseboard of our dishwasher because they could get underneath it...well Freya could anyway...her FAVE place to hide from mommy!!! took three tries before we outsmarted her...but we finally succeeded. Of course, if you actually OPEN it....all bets are off Now...to fert-proof the woodstove... we've decided it's nigh impossible without spending a lot of money....so they've been relegated to the parlor
