when i got home from school today, i went into the ferret's room and found Princess laying in her own urine!!!! i quickly picked her up and washed some of the gunk off of her. i put her down and she was on her side scooting on the floor! i put a big towel in the dryer for a few minutes and wrapped her around in it. a few minutes later, she started having a seizer!!!! she peed on me and it was cold. this is so heartbreaking. she is 8 years old and has insomnia. i tried to give her a little honey and ferretone, but she wouldnt open her mouth at all!!! i told my mother to take me to the vet but my step-dad has the car and is at work on the other side of town and wont be back till the morning. is there any natural remedies that can help her for the day. i dont have anyone to take me, everyone is too far away and dont care I LOVE HER!!!!!!!!!!!

Get a high protein meal into her. Call the vet and see if you can up her dosage of prednisolone or pediapred. If she seizures again rub the honey on her gums, and keep doing it til she comes around and then follow that with some chicken baby food or something easy to eat that is high in protein, like the chicken soup that is made for ferrets.

rub honey on her gums but be careful not to get bit as they do bite unknowlingly while in seizure then give her some chicken baby food or crushed kibble(soaked in hot water to a soup base & add a little cream if no cream - use whipping cream)serve warmed -use baby spoon or syringe feeder tube)

okay guys, i dont know if this was a good idea. but i found some syrup and squeezed a little bit into her mouth. she actually ate it! i put a little on her lips aswell as around her gums. she has calmed down a little. do you guys think that i should keep reheating the towel every hour or is she okay without it? she is very cold so i try to keep her warm. does she have a chance? should i miss school tomorrow to stay with her until my step ad comes back?

I would miss school to make sure that she stays OK until she can get to the vet. if she has another seizure and you're not there it could be really bad. could you not get a bus or a taxi to the vet?? I know its a lot of money but she might not be able to wait till your step dad gets home please keep us updated!!

Ok, I have been where you are now and know it is the most frightening and horrific experience. My ferret, Studidoo, who had insulinoma suddenly started with seizures and at first I didn't even know that's what it was because no-one had ever told me what one was like.
Firstly, the screaming, it is not necessarily an indication of pain, various people, including the vet, told me that the vocal chords restrict with the seizure and that produces a scream.
To get the honey into her, lift her lip and rub it on her gums and yes do be aware of biting because she won't do it deliberately but she will bite down. If you have prednisolone, mix it with the honey. Then try some soupies or high protein meat. to follow. When they are in this state they cannot swallow properly and so you need the honey to bring her around enough (rubbed into the gums she will get the benefit without having to swallow) so hopefully she can eat.
This is what I was advised with Studdidoo but having said all that remember you know your ferret best. My vet and I had planned to put Studdidoo to sleep calmly but then I was told of a ferret who had gone down exactly the same path as him and that once they found the correct dose of meds he stabilised and was still going fine a year later. So we put off putting him to sleep and tried. Won't freak you with the whole story but it didnt' work and I ended up at the emergency vet having him put down, not in the nice calm dignified way we had planned. I know even at that late stage many considered I should have kept trying but I saw what he went through and knew he wanted it to end. I don't regret putting him to sleep, I only regret the extra 8hours he had to suffer while we tried to find the right meds.
That was not meant to scare you but to let you know that you are the one there seeing what your Princess is going through and to say trust your instincts about what is best for your ferret and do what you see as best. Fight if that is what you both can do and hopefully your ferret will be like the ferret that was going strong a year after all the seizures, but also know that if you know it has all been too much for her It is ok to let her go.
Any way sending yo lots of positive vibes that Princess will get through this and you will still have lots more time together.
Ferrety kisses from my guys to the poor sick little girl

Thank you guys, im at school right now but i'll be on my way back home in about an hour or two.
Thérèse thank you for that! do you now how much of a relive it is for you to tell me this?? i've actually calmed down again. i cant wait to take her to the vet :/ she has gone through similar situations before, but the vet just told me to feed her right and it wont happen again. this morning i thought she wasnt moving but she is breathing slowly. should i keep reheating her towels? and how much honey should i keep feeding her? is there a such thing as too much in this situation? i hope the vet can help her, she's been through so much from her last owners and im trying my best to keep her safe and healthy which seems impossible with her!! we are in the process of moving so idk how much money we have to spare but i'll find a way.

Sending you and Princess hugs...I do not have any input on this honestly...I have never had a ferret...But the guy I am engaged too he has epilepsy, What I been told helps for both animals and humans having seizures Hold them and talk to them help give them something to hold onto, weather it be our voice or your hand. I am so sorry you have to go through this.

Just make sure to get a high protein meal into her within about 20 minutes of her coming around with the honey. Or you run the risk of putting her into another crash. We'll be thinking of you, and keep us posted. You can also try calling your vet and have him phone in a prescription for pediapred to the nearest pharmacy til you can get to him.

If you can bring her around enough to be able to swallow, you could syringe a slurry into her. I'm guessing that you're still feeding kibbles but I don't know. You can add water and her kibble in a blender or you can just use all meat baby food. Make it liquid enough to go into the syringe. Dribble it into the side of her mouth. There is a spot just at the corner of the lips where the teeth actually end, the syringe fits neatly in there. Do not squirt and be very careful because she cannot swallow correctly right now. Keep her warm (so using your warm towels idea) It's about all we can do to help you. She needs a vets care now. They can use some medication to stop or help stop her seizures. The question will be if they can get her blood sugar to regulate. I will light a healing candle for your wee one, I hope that everything comes out ok. Good luck ciao
