I am getting some bacon this season from a friend who raises her own (negotiating some heart, liver and chops too). Raised without persevatives and all that yucky stuff.
Is bacon and its fat a safe 'treat' raw or very lightly cooked? Not a regular thing for sure, but to try a couple times a year?

You mean pork right? I don't give mine pork but others do. As for real bacon...raw unseasoned should be ok.

Well, there's turkey bacon too. It is yummy. I am receiving ten lbs of bacon from a friend and was thinking if its alrighty I'd portion some away for Penne. I heat bacon very lightly- not quite cooking- and give it to my cat from time to time.

Actual bacon is NOT an appropriate treat for ferrets - the processing adds salts, spices, smoke flavorings and nitrites/nitrates.
Salt pork too, is not good - as this is pork that has been soaked in brine.
RAW Pork is o.k. but avoid any processed pork, ham, bacon, smoked etc.

Can ask for it not to be processed? I'm fine with whatever I can use, just thought it would be interesting.
Luckily I can still change my order to chops instead, my friend is making sure she knows who is ordering what from her stock before it goes to the butcher. I'm getting a lot of ground/chopped bone and organs out of the deal for Penelope and Braz's raw food.
If there's anything else I can use please let me know- once all the meat is sold my friends and I can have whatever is left for raw food for the fur children.

Yeah, let them know you want any of the items that will NOT get seasoned, smoked, salted, brined, peppered etc. But before you end up with a bunch of pork that isn't cut for typical cooking. See if your guys even like pork - mine don't. Ask for a sample if possible from a similar supplier.
Local grocery stores carry things like pigs feet, tails, ears, that are unprocessed - yours may too.
Cheers, Kim

I'm lucky in that I can get side bacon. It's unprocessed pork that is used to make bacon with. And yes, mine love it.

@sherry, That's what I'm aiming to get. @josiesmom- Penne eats pork, I gave her a tiny slice of pork chop before cooking it a few days ago. This deal is waay better than a grocery store- the math is about $60 for everything, and thats mostly human dinner meat, my small freezer will be stocked with whatever else no one buys. And its just nice, cause she's my friend and I know how she cares for her animals (been with her to help as I am farm girl, ). I'll let you know how it turns out.
