I saw powdered bone meal in the feed store. Is this ok for a calcium supplement since my girl isn't eating bones yet? And how much/how often should I give it?

i would only use human grade. do you know what brand they have? idk. can you do crushed eggshells instead? or a cuttle bone (like the kind that they use for birds). beverly aka "crazy lady" told us about the cuttle bone.

When it comes to supplements like bone powder...human grade only. What manufacturers constitute as pet quality is beyond me but I'm sure as long as it falls between the so called safety standards they will use it. I'm afraid that every since the use of melanine to boost protein standards in pet food, I've been a little gun shy about what pet supply quality really is. ciao

If you use cuttle bone, do you just put it in the cage? Or do you grind it up to powder? Do the ferrets chew on it?

i've read that the big thing with the non-human grade bone meal is that it tends to contain a lot of heavy metals.

I use the Solid Gold brand of bonemeal as it's the only one I could find that is tested free of heavy metals.

The bone meal powder is NaturaVet... They also had another supplement called Nupro for Ferrets... I think that is just a multi supplement sort of thing...

Mikeybox you just scrape the powder off the cuttle bone and put on their food. To my understanding, nupro is like a cheap version of carnivore care? There are several of those. Totally ferret makes one, so does natural gold. I'm sure they contain undesirable ingredients though. I think.the TF one (which used to be decent) now has molasses! The top ones are Carnivore Care and Wysong makes something that you can use for feeding a sick ferret VIA syringe. I forget what it is called.

Wysong Call of the Wild is what I have. You can sprinkle it on the raw meat.

Nupro does not have mollases I use it for my kids and its good for their poops. It doesn't sub bone though you do need bonemeal or cuttlebone even with the Nupro I would not trust it alone. The wysong stuff is good but its like $15-$20 for the stuff then an additional $16 for shipping unless you find a supply site that sells it. I think petfooddirect does not sure though.

The TF stuff seems like junk and the carnivore care is so expensive, that is used for really sick fuzzies who won't eat or had surgery.
