1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
I was reading online about insulonoma and looking for better duck soup recipes and happened onto this site.
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
I'm unsure. They are picky, and I can only be home to feed them a couple times a day. Right now I am leaning towards a commercial raw with still leaving them with kibble over night or while I am at work. I wouldn't want to do live, but I'm not against trying out other options once I get them to eat some different things. I would eventually like to get them on an all natural diet, but I want to start slow and I don't want Crazy to go too long between meals.
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
They have so many medical issues. Both Crazy and Curi have adrenal (although Curi seems cured since surgery). Crazy will not have surgery, since his tumor is on the right and its too risky especially since he also has insulonoma. Prednisone is not controlling his blood sugar, but regularly feeding him fatty high protein meals seems to help a lot. I want to see if I can help him through diet and maybe wean off the drugs a little. They are both 5 years old, and I want to try anything to make them a little healthier.
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It can be a commitment of several weeks or even months. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switchng your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as commited. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, or if you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc) then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing to make the commitment?
Yes.
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? Are they overweight? Underweight? How long have you had each ferret for?
I have two ferrets, Crazy and Curi. They are both five year old boys and I've had them since they were 8 months old - and yes they both have health problems as I said before. Curi had adrenal since he was 2, he had surgery for it a year ago and is doing much better although he is still pretty bald, but at least hes peeing normally. He also has a little skin growth, which is going to be removed soon. He was a little thin, but now I think his weight it perfect since surgery.
Crazy is also adrenal and he has a lupron implant, and doesn't seem to be having any complications from that. He also has insulonoma. His blood sugar at the last check was 65. He is take .4 ml prednisone twice a day. Crazy has a pretty big belly, but its hard to say if he's overweight, since part of it is the tumors in there He's also deaf, but that doesn't seem to both him at all. He's the white guy in the picture, Curi is the sable.
Crazy and Curi live with me, a foster cat, and a turtle.
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc)
EVO kibble is available all the time. Crazy gets duck soup made from chicken, gerbers baby food, chicken or beef liver and eggs twice a day and Curi gets it once in awhile as a treat. They both also love ferretone and get a spoonful every few days.
I recently bought a sample pack of primal raw for cats and I've been mixing that into the duck soup. Crazy is gobbling it up, but Curi just has a few bites. Curi acts like I am trying to poison him everytime I make him taste it, even though he seems to like it once he does. Curi also sometimes steals the foster cats terrible corn loaded kibble, but I try to keep it where he can't get to it.
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
No, when they were young they at marshalls, but my old vet suggested EVO. They both have had improvements in energy and poop consistency since switching to EVO, so I am hoping making an even bigger switch will have even bigger benefits.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
Hmm, I think they are just normal ferrets. They are still pretty happy guys despite their issues. They love to play, and they love each other. Their favorite game is to ride on a towel and have me drag them around the room, well that and hiding and attacking my feet as I walk by.
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
Normally everyday.
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
