Keri, the reason the vit. A helps so much with distemper is that the distemper virus itself depletes the host body's supply of vit. A. By adding extra in, you help keep the animal stabilized til the virus has run it's course.

I remember reading that about polar bear liver too! But wasn't it injections of Vitamin A that just helped some of the distemper ferrets pull through? (Or was that E?) It seems like they may be much less susceptible to Vitamin A poisoning than was believed, and definitely less so than humans. In my experience, liver should be fed in small amounts anyway, if only to make litter box cleanup easier... Katt, I dunno what regulations are up in your neck of the woods, but bagging a deer in velvet around here would mean you're poaching well outside of hunting seasons. Too bad, given the price of that stuff! A few weeks ago I nabbed us a freezer full of free venison... with my car I don't know hunting seasons and antler seasons. Shane's family is big into hunting, me not so much. I support it and would love to live off the land more, but I don't hunt myself. I jsut know that you can buy velvet antler for treats and supplement, so maybe you could hunt some. Guess not!

Hurricanekatt - I agree that it has to be a healthier meat source I'm just working through my own inner demons here. My mom raised us on McDonalds, literally every night was drive-thru, and as a former vegetarian those sterile grocery store packages let me pretend my meat wasn't an animal. 13 years ago I decided if I was going to be a omnivore, I should have a much more personal relationship with my food. Now I know where my meat comes from and how it became meat. I'm still slightly uncomfortable with the idea but I'm at peace with it. I raise all my own veggies and what I can't get comes from local farmers. My friend raises chickens in her backyard as a urban homesteader and I would LOVE to do that but I'm not sure I could make the commitment. Living off the land, AND off the grid, would be an amazing experience for me and it's on my bucket list! Food, Inc. is an amazing movie, I made my family watch it, told them if they are going to eat it, they better know where it came from! So, yeah, inner demons. I found our DNR releases health reports of various hunted animals so I'm going to keep an eye on those and if it looks questionable, pass. The deer here suffer a lot from a wasting disease because urban expansion has pushed them into over population. I don't know much about it yet. ~Kelli

@ weloveourweasels. All snakes are capable of cannabalism, they are opportunistic. That is why good snake owners keep them in individual enclosures. Besides the competition and confusion... and the ease of spreading parasites. Although there are a couple subspecies of garter that prefer to live in numbers, but you can bet when there's too many they will eat each other.

Scored some quail from our friend. His dad hunted them got about 30. They were going to deep fry them for Thanksgiving but forgot to thaw them. Jay went and ate with them and brought back 4 vacuum sealed bags full. Not sure how many birds in each, but awesome! Should I pick out the buckshot before I freeze to kill potential parasites or does it matter?

Whether it's picked out before freezing or after doesn't really matter. As long as it comes out before feeding the ferrets! What a score by the way!

I know I was so happy those suckers cost $10 for 4 tiny birds which I have bought before so I know they LOVE quail. Its already in the freezer so i'll pick it out later. I looked at the bags again and there are certainly multiple in the bags.
