When i got my first 2 ferrets, i called the vet to find out the best food for them,( that was before i knew about this group), she told me raw. She was concerned if i would be willing to do it. She was excited when i told her yes. We then found a closer vet. I was a little scared to answere her as to what i was feeding them. When i told her, she was actually happy to hear i fed raw. Then came the first visit for my dogs and cats. I was very scared to tell her that i was feeding raw. After all, NOBODY feeds raw in this area. But the only response was one of concern that the cats were getting proper nutrition, mainly the one item that starts with the letter T that i cant ever think of. When i gave her the menu, she looked at me and said looks like thair needs are being met. She has also seen how good our special needs kitten is doing on raw. She is doing so well that as of her 5 month old birthday, (now 6 months), she is no longer classified as special needs. She can finaly poop by herself. The vet now says that i must be doing something correct. Over all, vets around here are pretty open-minded.

I live in a town with 11,000 people and while I don't have a ferret just yet I'm worried about what the vets will say. We only have 2 in town and the one I see for my cats...I don't overly like. They don't seem very knowledge about nutrition at all, this is kind of a hick town with no pet stores that have ferrets near so I doubt they see many.
My cat was just diagnosed with Diabetes and he started talking about how they are obligate carnivores which I know, I know a lot more about diet than he does heh, and I supplement with raw currently; well anyway he said I needed to change the diet so he prescribed Hills M/D which is low carb but hte first ingredients are chicken by product and corn, ugh I was mad and made my boyfriend take the food back. I switched the cat over to Evo and am hoping to get him eating raw but I don't think the vet will approve and I don't know what to say since I have social anxiety and don't handle that stuff well. It's going to be hard enoughto tell him that I'm testing the cat's blood sugar at home. I just hate the ignorance.
The thing I really worry about with vets is my choice to not vaccinate my cats and I don't want to vaccinate the future ferrets, can't they report you since rabies is by law? I worry about it with the cats too, the one with diabetes was recently vaccinated so we could adopt a dog which I was mad about but anyway, now that he needs to see the vet a lot I'm going to have to fight them on the vaccinations, sigh. Sorry to ramble and take over the thread with cat stuff.

I am going to my second vet appointment tomorrow. The first one was last month, to get acquainted. This one is a progress check up. I haven't had a ferret before and want to make sure I don't inadvertently hurt him. (I have had cats and dogs before.) May I recommend this website? I am fairly certain that she approves of raw because we discussed it the last visit. I would just like to make sure you all are ok with it. Your depth of knowledge and research/hands on experience is refreshing. My sister had three, but she said all she did was feed them cat food and they stayed in a cage all (80-90%) of the time. Ferrets are far too smart and active to stay in a cage for so long. That's like keeping killer whales in captivity.........oops did I say that out loud?
