I found someone who sells these for about .20 each. My question is, would there be enough nutritional value (or meat) in these to be able to use? I'd have to buy about 100 to order, so want to be sure they are worth it. As well... would the ferts accept it like chicken? They've never had day old chicks so wondering if there might be an acceptance issue. They have been good about most meats i throw at them, since they finally started eating chunks.
thanks in advance.

From what I've read they are low in calcium and better used as a treat or a once or twice a week thing than a regular food source

If your fuzz aren't used to eating whole prey, don't expect them to take the chicks like they would chicken. The feathers add a whole new dimension.
As stated, chicks are low in calcium and I don't count them as a protein source because I feed them infrequently. However, you can still get the order of 100 and freeze them.

To be honest, even my most obstinate ferret went bonkers over these things ;D But then- they were used to adult mice by this point. Personally, I'd get them. Although they should in no way make up a major part of the diet, they can and should be used as part of an age rotation. You should try to feed as many ages of a given species as you can manage. Yes, they are very low in calcium(which ferrets need a lot of), but once a week certainly won't hurt them. They are kind of the "cotton candy" of the whole prey world ;D

I'd say the trick is getting them to try the chicks. Once your fuzz taste them they'll probably like them but again, ferrets that aren't used to whole prey aren't always happy to put fur and feathers in their mouthes =P

yes the feathers were a concern. THey do eat quail(no feathers) and chicken feet with little issues. I may do it just to see. thanks

My smaller ferret devoured his first baby quail (almost fist size) just last week! Both really love mice as well, but i'd like to give them more whole prey. What can you suggest ? I've looked everywhere for baby chickens for them, does anyone from Australia (Sydney) know where i can get them ? Thanks =)

Check with reptile rescues in your area. They might have a better idea.

Also try hatcheries. I have sourced all mine as male leghorns from hatcheries that supply layers...the males are pretty much useless, so they are cheap, but you may have to commit to some reasonable quantity.

There is no true nutritional value, treat them as candy or treats (it doesn't mean you can't feed them, most people's fuzzes love them) or another type of protein, just don't feed huge numbers at any time. As long as you feed other proteins you can feed them without issue...think of them as a McDonalds meal ;D. If you want to share an order sometime let me know. I've been wanting to order from them but I can't get to Scarborough (driving in the city scares the h*** out of me...it's a phobia I know and I should face it but ). I would have no problem meeting with you someplace to share an order with you if you like. ciao

Thats a great idea Heather, I'll let you know if i do. At this point Neka may need mushier food, sothat would leave just zeke eating them, and as treats they would last a LONG time LOL horse656 let me know if you order them and how your fuzz like.

Yes, for the next little while Neka is indeed going to need mushy type foods and feathers definitely don't qualify. I've heard that if you order 1000 that the price is even cheaper. I was going to order that until I found that I had to do the pick up Let me know when you're ready to try this, everyone I've spoken to says that the little ones really love these and my guys could use something like this to round out more of their diet. ciao
