If its a blockage, try to act as soon as possible. The longer the foreign object stats in his system, the worse it will be. Tissue will begin to decay, and you'll have a much more complicated surgery on your hand.
In the interim, id be pushing some lax to try to lubricate the blockage.

He's in surgery right now. I managed to find a great vet that could do it today. It's hard to find a good vet, especially in the land of CaCa. I'm glad we found her because he started vomiting this morning. Let's hope it all goes well in there. He's 2 or 3... I got him from a rescue a little over a month ago! Doesn't he realize he's supposed to let me save up money? I wonder if this might be some sort of record.

chances are he had the foreign body in there since before you got him and it started to cause problems now. it could even be a large hairball. i hope he comes out okay & that it is only a foreign body. any news?

He's home now... I'm taking him back early in the morning to have him observed for the day. It's been hectic and there was a lot to absorb, so my apologies for not posting sooner. Also, I can't really remember the technical terms for what is going on. There was no foreign object in his stomach. She described a mass at the bottom of his stomach where it supposed to empty out. She said this mass was obstructing this area and preventing his stomach from emptying. His stomach contents were about 60ml... he was very very distended. The distention caused some ulceration, so the contents of his stomach were mostly dark blood and the food I managed to feed him over the last few days. She took a biopsy of the mass... but she doesn't believe it's a tumor, based on his age and the location. But better to be sure. She thinks it's an inflammatory response. She mentioned IBD but I didn't ask much about that -- one step at a time is all I can handle and I was more interested in the details about keeping him alive for the night.
For now, his prognosis is guarded. The stomach tissues are so very delicate and we're hoping he heals and that his stomach can recover from this trauma. As long as nothing tears inside and he is able to digest nutrients over the next few days, we might be out of the woods. It's just so hard to know with these little guys.
He's knocked out on pain meds and I am keeping him warm for the night. That's all I really can do at this point. I think tomorrow they will start feeding him super bland food to get some nutrients into his weak little body.

I will light his healing candle. Poor wee mite. Perhaps, your vet will have more answers for you in the next few days. She has no idea as to what this "blockage" was... so was she able to contain and remove this object entirely? did it come away cleanly? Did she send it off for biopsy? Give the wee one a hug from me....good luck, we will be sending healing thoughts to your wee one. Thank you for popping in to keep us updated in this trying time ciao

Yes, it's been sent out to the lab to determine what kind of tissue it is. She wasn't able to resect it completely because his stomach tissues were in such bad shape from being so very distended. Assuming that this is some inflammatory/IBD thing, I'm going to ask her tomorrow if she thinks he just doesn't handle chicken well. It's hard to tell what it could be until we get the biopsy results back. On a lighter note, he was able to get up and crawl away to go pee.

He will prob just be on hills a/d diet right? Don't give him any kibble at all. But I'm sure she's told you that. Could be a foreign body that he ingested a long time ago. I'm glad he pulled through the surgery.

I agree with miamiferret....it may not have been anything you did at all. One of the problems with dealing with rescues or second hand ferrets is that they all come with baggage. Sometimes that baggage is behavioural, a lot of the time it's hidden health issues. A floating blockage can go on for a long time before it finally gets wedged and presents itself as a life threatening issue. It may not be chicken or anything that you did specifically...it was just the time. Blaming yourself comes easy when dealing with the wee ones, don't. I know I've been there. I've been chewed out by my vet a few times when I've said what did I do wrong, what could I have done differently....her line..."you picked up the pieces, this was someone elses problem that you adopted". So, give yourself a pat on the back for getting your little one into surgery in time. We will keep the candles burning and the healing thoughts coming. Please keep us posted ciao
