For all of you in the Illinois-Kansas and anywhere on either side, what stores are the best place to get a nice cheap whole chicken with the organs inside? i am starting my ferrets on Raw soon and get some extra money on Sunday or Monday . i plan on getting one or two whole chickens to start them on the switching process. SO if anyone knows of ANY stores that have some cheap whole chickens with no preservatives or whatever please tell me! and the price range too

Obviously I can't give the those particulars, but do you have any farmer's markets in your area? You can get some pretty large chickens at most for a reasonable amount.

Don't know what stores you have available? Maybe you could list some local stores and see if anyone has any experience with them. Also, most whole chickens only come with a single heart, single liver, a neck, and a gizzard. This is not enough to meat the organ needs alone. Heart & gizzards are muscle meats, so liver is the only organ usually included. Sometimes I find kidneys attached on the inside, but they are super tiny. Walmart often has good prices on whole chickens. One of my favorite grocery stores is Save-A-Lot. I find cheap cuts of stewing beef, pork, turkey necks, chicken feet, and whole chickens there. I've gotten a whole chicken for under 90 cents a lb Whole chickens are usually about 5 lbs, so thats under $5 for 5 lbs of meat. Aside from that, just watch the weekly sale ads for your local grocery stores. When you see a good price, stock up! For whole chicken I like to keep it under $1 a lb. I spend a bit more if I get a pack of chicken wings. Beef I like to keep under $2 a lb (my kids LOVE the stewing beef). We humans eat a lot of pork, so most of the pork meat my kids get is just the trimmings from our food. If I buy pork, I ilke to spend under $2.5 a lb. Cornish game hens are my splurge meat, and I pay about $7 for 2 whole hens. Probably works out to about $3.5 a lb. Hearts and liver are both cheap. So are turkey necks. Hope that helps

An under-used resource is your local farmer, and given the states you listed... you have half the Midwest full of them! Where I live we have a group called Buy-Fresh-Buy-Local that links to all the suppliers in our area. Considering it's size I would imagine Chicago has a lot more options than we do! I also have 3 people within walking distance raising chickens in their backyard for food for their family. You wouldn't know it by walking by either. I know because they're all friends. I'd be homesteading more than veggies but my SO only allows so much of my craziness A Google search should give you organizations in your area or links to local farmers who will sell direct. Many raise more than one type of animal so you should be able to get several proteins this way. I know I've brought it up before but meat processors are also a good resource, just give them a call and see which ones will work with you for organ meats. Good Luck! ~Kelli
