Great stuff. Are you ready to try a different protein, or maybe some bone mixed in his favourite soupy? ciao

Great stuff. Are you ready to try a different protein, or maybe some bone mixed in his favourite soupy? ciao A different protein besides chicken and turkey? What would you suggest? He's only just getting used to eating the ground turkey regularly. I have no problem with feeding him bone mixed in, but whenever bone is involved DH cuts it up. I messed up a tendon in my hand last year kneading a roast and cutting up bone seems to aggravate it, so he is taking care of that. ;D I keep on him about cutting off a chicken wing and smashing it up, but...sigh. Time to bug him some more, or get fed up and do it myself, because it's just not happening.

Pork beef ???duck ???quail (you won't have to bash the bones )lamb whatever your little heart desires , whatever is available. He needs a minimum of 3 different types of proteins. The more he has the better his diet. ciao

The more he has the better his diet. ciao I do understand he needs a minimum of 3 different types of protein, but we have only just got him eating these two. I feed my cats raw and have done so with our dog who is no longer with us. They eat/ate chicken, pork, lamb, beef, quail, rabbit, duck, buffalo - then whatever I can get my hands on from my co-op which varies seasonally depending on when they have ostrich, venison, partridge... So on. Why all the question mark smilies? Why do I not need to bash those, when he has not had bone before? My understanding was that chicken wings bashed were best to start with on bone from our prior conversation. Just trying to clarify to make sure I understand. I'm not sure I do if he can eat un-bashed bone when not having been introduced to bone (he has run off with things with bone in them but not eaten them).

I did not mean to cloud the issue. You may take as long as you like with each protein. If he's not eating bone yet, then bashing will help indeed. I meant that the quail might actually be a bone that wouldn't need bashing....nothing else It's very fine and many of my "I don't want to eat bone, momma" will eat this bone. Your variety of meats that you have available is great, but you have to remember, that not everyone feeds that type of variety that I mentor...I have to assume the worse and hope for the best. You asked me what different types of protein besides chicken and turkey? what would I suggest? I suggested. I wasn't aware of your meaning. I interpreted it as that, not that you wanted to sit for awhile longer on the same protein. Sorry ciao

I don't WANT to sit longer on the same protein, but I wasn't (still am not) sure how to proceed. He still eats soup - though very thick now, barely blended - the best and is only eating ground turkey and chicken, and small cut up pieces of chicken. I did want your suggestions on what else to start throwing in. I don't know how stubborn he is going to be on that though or if I'll be moving too fast to throw in a bunch of things... You interpreted me correctly. Please don't apologize - written communication is just sometimes confusing and you're busy and have to write a bunch of other people so I just wanted to make sure I understood you. We are out of quail, I will have to go pick some more up from the market, but I don't know when I will be able to - as soon as I can, I will. Thanks for the tip! Hopefully he will love it if most of your ferrets do...

You can try just a piece or two (very tiny) of a different protein. Nothing huge, not a lot of pieces in the soupy...just to give it a slightly different flavour. If he doesn't like that piece of meat he will just avoid it and eat the soupy. If it keeps showing up every now and then, he might accept it, then you just keep adding more new bits until he accepts that protein. If he rejects it then you just wait and try again later. ciao

Good news! Teddy is eating huge hunks of pork - chews them scissor-like through the sides of his mouth like a pro! I think he likes his pork even better than his soup (he prefers the pork over a cube) - we could have started him on that almost! Next up: chicken bone and I think also some beef maybe. I'll let you know when we get a chance to drive to the asian market for the more exotic foodstuffs.

I had a pic, but it was too blurry - about a week ago Teddy started eating his first bone. A smashed chicken wing. He's eating chicken wing, bone-in chicken breast and bone-in chicken thighs. What we've discovered is anything more than one new thing per week and he might be stubborn about it, so that's why we waited a little on the beef, and I still have yet to get to the asian store for some more exotic things. We've been really busy with gardening and some other issues.

Eating bone...that's great What a good boy. Thanks for checking in. Let me know what happens when you try him on your next protein choice. That usually results in the brats digging in their heals but we will see. No point in creating issues before there is one. ciao

GREAT NEWS!!! =D Not only is he eating cornish hen (bones and all - I know it's just smaller chickens but it made me happy hehe) but he LOVES his beef! He likes the beef even better than the cornish hen! Wahoo!! No heel-digging! ETA: He also loves liver and heart!

Fantastic ....that is so great. So, what is your next move? You've done really well. Give your little furbaby a big hug and tell him he's such a good boy. Loves beef....you've really got a good little boy. Have you thought to try him with turkey? or maybe pork....he's on a roll. If he balks just step back but now that he's getting adventuresome it might indeed be a time to try another protein. Now, remember you know him best so if you think that's too fast then let him get used to those proteins. He eats liver , a number of my guys won't give you the time of day for it ciao

Hey Heather - if you go back a bit you'll remember he's already eating turkey and pork. Four proteins so far! We've got: regular chicken, turkey, pork, and beef ! Plus organs and bone. Really? (About the liver.) That makes me so happy! He tore into that liver like it was the nom-iest thing ever! What would you suggest next? I was thinking the next least expensive would be quail or duck, and then rabbit. It will warrant a trip to the store though. I think we have some duck wings and duck heart in the deep freezer till then, thankfully!

Hmmm, very negligent of me....yes your guy is already eating those proteins...4 proteins....are the pair of you ready to graduate or do you want to stay on for a bit longer? Are you still trying to put weight on him? If so, I'd go for the duck...fattier meat. It's also got a stronger flavour and may be the protein most likely to be rejected. Up to you ciao
