When I first got my ferret I didn't take her out too much because of all the attention, and because it felt so weird. Nobody ever has a ferret just walking about around here so anytime someone sees one, they get excited or surprised. I've gotten more used to it, so I've started taking her out a lot more. Mostly at night, and in quiet areas. Still garners a lot of attention though. Last night I had a family with a 6 and a 7 year old want to take a picture with her. Kids especially seem to go nuts over them.
How do people in your area react to you having your ferret out in the world? Almost everyone stares at me, a lot comment on the fact that "LOOK THERE'S A FERRET!" and some want to talk to me and pet her. Others apparently want to take pictures lol.
I guess people being excited at seeing her is better than them thinking its weird that I'm walking her.

Same here....you get everything from wow to weird. Yes, they do attract a lot of attention. The little ones for the most part love it and just lap it up. I lost my public relations fuzz this spring and at the moment I really don't have too many who do well or are healthy enough to go trundling in public. Minion still bites...not good for public relations My son, calls them a "chick magnet" Teenagers ciao

LoL Heather I love the chick magnet quote lol ( guess he dont mind taking the ferrets out then lol ) im my case its me who causes attention simply because I work my ferrets lol ( in england ferreting is classed as the domain of the male lol ) I am quite used to hearing but you cant do it your a woman ! women are frightened of ferrets lol ( oh yeah bring it on lol ) I may not look so feminine in full camo gear wellington boots and covered in mud with a ferret box slung over my shoulder but believe me I scrub up pretty well and I am all female after a long soak in the tub lol I am sure lorelie gets the same reaction lol take care bye for now Bev

I love this thread! Whenever I take my fuzzies out for a walk its as if I'm famous all of a sudden! Every other person that walks past me stops and asks me sooo many questions..
Some people have never actually seen a ferret before so you can imagine how they react! some people are excited, where as some are scared to death!
You wont believe this... I remember one time a little boy saw me walking one of the ferrets... he asked his mum what type of animal it was... his Mum replied "its a little sausage dog I think"!!! A SAUSAGE DOG!!! have you ever heard anything so stupid!! I very quickly corrected her and explained to the little boy that it was a ferret! I think his Mum felt very stupid! Hahaha!!!
but most of the time people are just really intrigued and interested and just ask me loads of questions.

I don't like take my kids out I am to scared someone will get them sick. When I tell people I have them they will ask lots of questions or they say eww that's nasty your weird. I makes me sad. How can people just hate some animals. I can say I don't like the way pugs look. But I have been around pugs and I fell in love. I don't think its fair to tell some one their weird when you have no Idea why they love the animals they love.

Most people in my area are total morans, lol. That being said, all of these are reactions of adults: even before Mojito started loosing his tail fur people always thought he was an opossum (wtf?!).. I guess because he isn't the color of a stereo typical ferret? SoCo, on the other hand, is silver (much closer to an opossums color) and people always just ask, "What is that?!"... Also, while I had Kahlua out one day someone asked me, "Is that a squirrel or a skunk?" ...... uhm... oookay. I was also asked if Captain Morgan was a mongoose. Yea sure, I have a mongoose in an apartment- that is totally legal. The few people who can recognize a ferret, normally make a comment about "voluntarily living with rodents" to which I respond, "Ferrets aren't rodents, they eat rodents." and get really weird looks. Then there are the kids.... A lot of kids want to hold them, pet them, play with them and then ask their parents to fallow suit. If the parent says something positive (oh s/he is cute or oh s/he is soft) the kids usually ask to get one and then the parent says something about not wanting a rodent in the house and I give the same response as earlier but usually a more freaked out look from the parent, haha. Oh and people always ask, "Does it bite people?" and if its SoCo or Morgan the answer is no which is usually fallowed by, "Do you think it will bite me?" - - because you are so much different from every other person... maybe its my mistake- maybe they aren't really people? and yes, I always get asked if they spread disease.. like I would keep a disease spreading animal in my home

My mother hates the ferrets, enough so that she's not been to my place in over 14 yrs. ciao

I often get people walking past who will say something horrible about ferrets to the person theyre with loud enough so they know I'll hear. One bloke walked past once and said to his mate,"my dad used to have ferrets and when they bite you have to smash em Against a wall to make them let go"
I wanted to punch him!
Or I get people joking about how their dog would eat the ferret for dinner.

I don't like to take my ferret out bc of germs, fleas, ticks, etc. but many years ago (when i was in my teens and more "adventerous" with my ferrets i.e., less cautious and paranoid) i took my ferret to the mall and a lady that worked in one of the fitting rooms squealed and she said "Oh my God! is that a little monkey!? Look Agnes! its a little Monkey!!" LMFAO. i guess because he had a dark nose and a dark mask and his head was bobbing up and down. so funny. at the vets office i see all kinds of things. the cutest EVER was a lady holding a Lemur. he was SO cute. she was carrying him as you would carry a toddler. he had his legs wrapped around her waste and with his hands he was hanging onto her shoulders and he looked at me with these piercing eyes. he had quite a stare! I love seeing odd animals when I'm out at the vets office. I don't like it when people judge my ferrets. funny scene in the movie "the Big Lebowski" --Jeff Bridges is taking a bubble bath and the nihilists come into his bathroom with a ferret on a leash. they put the ferret in the tub with him (the ferret attacked him which i don't like bc it gives ferrets a bad impression). but after that Jeff Bridges kept referring to the ferret as a "marmot"

@ Heather - that's terrible about your mother I just don't understand how people can hate an animal so much. My ex-boyfriend of 3 years hates ferrets. He insists that it's "in his family's genetics" and all of his relatives claim to hate them too. Have any of them ever seen a ferret up close? Of course not! Guess what I got just 3 months after we broke up? Olivia and Sophie Needless to say I will never ever choose a boy over ferrets again! If you don't like my ferrets, I don't want to date you. Maybe that's terrible but my ferrets will never dump me Funniest part is him and I still talk and he's actually seen Olivia and Sophie and admits that they are kind of cute and don't smell and aren't "creepy pets that crazy people have" after all. Other than that, the reactions are all positive my mom called me today from work checking up on Olivia. She was like "I can't believe I am calling to check up on your ferret... But I am" #lol# and people at the vet's always want to see them One of my good friends absolutely adores them too, he always insists on driving us to the vet so he can cuddle with Sophie and the other day he was worried about Olivia and told me he hoped she was okay because he kind of "loves her evil little ways"

I only take mine to petco with me or sometimes to the store and have them in my tote bag =) I took whitey to go get a movie from redbox and he had his head poking out of my bag and the woman next to me starting screaming omg its a rat!! I'm like what the h*ll, I was looking around, then I realized wow she just called whitey a rat, I was like he is a ferret. Other than that little kids are like mom look a ferret! Its cute. My family doesn't like them at all! My grandma told me to stay in Alaska and not to come home because the ferrets aren't aloud in her house, =( I told her i'm not leaving without them she said oh well. It pissed me off
