Took the 3 in for their lupron today(Sinnead, Zeus, Athena). Also had an appt. with the vet for Sinnead as her adrenal is advancing. She's been on lupron for 2 years, quite well controlled until the last couple of months. My thought(after talking to the techs) had been having her lupron increased, but the vet mentioned she's seen much better results by using a melatonin implant in conjunction with lupron, when the lupron itself quits working. So, she gets an implant on Thursday. We'll see how well, or even if, it works for her. I've sent to peptech to get the info on des. Hopefully will have that info for the vet at that time. Does anyone know if there are any contraindications using des with melatonin? Or would it work with the melatonin in the same way lupron does?

As with the lupron, Deslorelin can be used with Melatonin. The Lupron and the Des. work the same - they work on the pituitary to block the "make hormones" signals that get sent to the body. In contrast, the Melatonin affects levels of LH. Studies have been done with Melatonin. The melatonin work mostly on the clinical signs of adrenal rather than affecting he actual levels of hormone production. However, some vets feel that the melatonin coupled with lupron (OR Deslorelin) may work better than Lupron (or Des. ) by itself.

That's what I was thinking, Jennifer, but wanted to check it out just in case. Thanks

Hopefully my deslorelin will be in this week. Zoey already has 2 melatonin implants. It is good to know that it is OK for both.

I've got 4 on des implants now. I use the melatonin with it but I'm using the oral melatonin. It's just what I've always used and had really good success with it. The only one that's not responding to the des implants is Lady "B". I'm hoping that she's one of the ones that is just a little slower on the uptake. I've seen positive results in the short time that the guys have had their implants. Pooka is now carrying a full winter coat, including her belly. Captain Jack is no longer mounting anyone and both he and Sprite have thicker softer coats. Sprite's vulva is shrinking so that's a positive too. I'm concerned with Lady "B" though. I"m guessing if no positive results are seen with the des implants that it's the same as the lupron....that it's malignant tumour growth ciao

Does it matter when the des. is given in the year?

Only if you're using it to postpone a season or use as a chemical castration ciao

Well, I got a response back from peptech. I have to say I'm impressed. I sent the query on Saturday, and it was in my inbox this morning Unfortunately, because it's Canada, they can give *me* any info on cost, minimum order requirements, nothing Only the vet can get that here. Oh, well. I'll print off what I have, and bring it with me on Thurs.

Sherry- I am in Canada too. Your vet has to get an Emergency Medical Release form so it can come into canada, about $100. It takes about a week to get approval. Then your vet just has to email peptech to tell them how much they want. The implants cost $45 each, plus shipping which is about $100 too.

Thanks for the price list, sherik! I got the other info for ordering, just not price/quantities. Out of curiosity, where do they apply for the EMR form?

Don't forget all prices are in Australian...pound sterling if I remember. The powers that be, are really quick, the time usually involves transport. Even over the Christmas holidays, the mayhem that is involved in shipping at that time and one of the ladies taking holidays...it took only 3 weeks to get the shipment. The hardest part is that they've been running out of product...seems there are vets in the US who've been taking advantage of the discount and buy large amounts and then selling them to fellow vets in the US. The last I heard the next shipment was due in the mid of Feb. ciao

One of my girls is adrenal, been losing hair since I rescued her 3 months ago (even at that point she already had hairloss). I was ready to start her on melatonin, but then my vet tested her glucose and it looks like she is also insulinomic. She isn't that experienced with ferrets, but did some research and found you can't give insulinomic ferrets melatonin with success. Is that correct? My question is, would deslorelin work instead? what about lupron? Would feeding raw fix the symptoms of insulinoma so that she can be on these meds? Sorry for the slight hijack!
