Riley is approx 4 years old. Suddenly tonight she peed in the bath tub. It was red. Not pink. Red.
There was pee all over her - which is not normal. Only 5 minutes later it happened again.
I'm waiting on the emergency vet to call me back.
What could be happening?

Vet said it doesn't sound like an emergency since she is alert and has been seen eating today. We are to keep an eye on her and be at the vet at 8am when they open. Looks like it will be a sleepless night. I just hope it's something simple.

It's serious no matter how you play it but the least is a bladder infection. ...bladder stones...those are two of my most common considerations. There are others, kidney infection....or other kidney related issues. She needs to be seen by a vet though. Good luck, a healing candle is lit ciao

I know it's serious. When I said simple, I just meant I hope it's something we can just give her antibiotics for and her to heal quickly. No idea what I would do without her.
Thank you for the candle.

I disagree with the vet. Is the vet you talked to experienced with ferrets? If she can make it long enough to see an experienced ferret best that would be good but I would be watching her like a hawk. Ferrets can go from mildly bad to unbelievably terrible FAST. And urinating that much blood that the urine is not pink but red, then urinating on herself, and urinating often....sounds like a kidney issue to me. If she shows any signs of getting worse I'd bring her in immediately. Here's hoping it is something simple and your little girl feels better soon. Please keep us posted!

Is there another emergency vet you can see? One experienced with ferrets....?

Yes, it is the normal vet we take the ferrets to. She has been my choice vet for a couple years and knows my ferrets well. I agree with you it sounds like an emergency, hence why I will not be sleep tonight...She is very alert though and I saw her eating earlier today. Her past few pees have been normal looking. Then one was a tanish pink. Then normal again. It was only the first one I saw looked pure red. Not sure if that means anything or not though.

Hmmm... Well as long as she is not continuing to pee pure red and seems fine otherwise I'd just keep touching base with the vet as needed and keep an eye on her like the vet said. If she pees pure red again I'd definitely consider taking her in tonight. I hope she doesn't though! Here's hoping it's something simple! #pray$ <-cloeset thing to a good luck smiley lol

Know...just lolling you into a false sense of security...all it means is that her original accident was heavily concentrated (that's a good thing by the way) whereas now it is becoming more diluted. Carnivores are supposed to have dark concentrated urine. I have to admit I'm very concerned about the darkness of the blood. My concern is and you can correct me if I'm wrong...vets in general have a tendency to react to mute customer issues because most pet parents over-react. So, you tell them dark blood colour and they think...heavy concentration, ignoring that you might actually understand what you're doing and saying. I'm not saying this is what happened, I'm just saying it does happen ciao

Thank you Kat! Yes, we are keeping an eye on her. She has curled up to sleep now. Going to monitor her very closely. I will definitely take her in if she shows signs of getting worse or pees pure red again.

Heather - I know. She seemed a bit unconcerned. But I was like "So, even though she can't control her bladder and her pee is red....I should wait until morning?" And she said yes. I rephrased and she still said yes. So....I guess. I'm soooo worried. This will be a very sleepless night. Keeping a very close eye on her.

You should take her in anyway. I don't care what the vet says, if she is peeing pure blood you need to take her in. if she is peeing THAT much blood then she might lose a lot and not make it! if i had a heeling candle i would light one! i will light a candle anyway and call it a healing candle. Your little girl makes my sick little rob look perfectly healthy! i would take her to an Emergency vet.

Unfortunately, a lot of vet's offices are not manned at night. I'm lucky in that my vet lives at her office (it's a couple of century houses and a livery stable)...she used to live over her office but now lives next door but most vets use an answering service and there is really no one at the office at all during the night. Showing up at the vets without her giving the ok, would mean you would be waiting outside an empty building in the parking lot ciao

Right. Yeah, my vet I have to call an emergency number, leave a message. Within 20 minutes they are supposed to get back. And to open the clinic they have to call in about 3 people total. So they will charge you at least 1k already without a diagnosis testing or treatment. :/
And we are having financial issues already. So we are going to try to wait it out. I'm getting up around 7 so I can be at the vet at 8am when they open. I just hope Riley will be okay overnight.

Good luck, if you have problems...pop on...there's almost always someone on board. Have you a skype addy? They're usually chatting on there till all hours. If you haven't signed in, get Sherry to get you a pass so if you need to talk to someone there will be someone on. Katt and Mikey are often on board. Anyway...good luck. Please keep us posted, we worry about your little ones too ciao
