Not meaning to hijack this thread but I actually got online because I'm having similar issues with Bastien. I've been giving him pumpkin mixed with olive oil and some ferretlax for the last couple of days. I think he's doing a little better but I'm still worried. Planning to take him to vet in the morning but wondering if I should try the vaseline tonight? And HOW do you get vaseline in them??

Mine just eat it. You can mix tone or whatever they like into it. But that's the base ingredient in most laxes. How are his poops? If he's been having some good, large orange poops from the pumpkin, he should hopefully be good.

Some ferrets will eat it plain. You can mix ferretone or ferretvite into it to turn it into a treat too (don't be afraid to use a generous amount). You can try mixing pumpkin into it too, or if you have a good dishwasher you can even mix the Vaseline into a warm batch of soups. (works best when you make the soup with hot water - makes the soup warm and tasty and helps the Vaseline mix in just a little bit better). If you do that be sure to add the Vaseline after the other ingredients but before mixing and be prepared for your blender to be a mess. ;D Really not the best way to go but if all else fails...

You should tell your mom that sick or not it's a good idea to feed them soup regularly so that they recognize it as food for when they DO get sick and you're not stressing them out with new foods.

If you are concerned about a blockage, I'd definitely be waking him up! Lucrezia didn't WANT to wake up with hers. If we'd left her, we may have lost her.

Ferrets are notorious for using sleep to hide their illnesses and their pain. If left to their own devices they will slip into a coma and die and their people will be none the wiser. I would make sure to wake him at least every couple of hours, he will not get his bowels to move without activity...which is one of the reasons why they sleep. The movement against the blockage is painful, if they stay still they can postpone that pain ciao

I have been waking him up every thirty minutes. i don't mind making him wake up and move a little bit, but i just want to make sure he gets SOME sleep to sleep of his bug, whatever it is. he is worrying me so much! with the stress of William passing and now him being sick, i am just so Stressed right now i still have to introduce rob with my other ferrets, so i have to delay that until he is better for a week to make sure he does not give any thing to my other ferrets. and that is going to slow down the introduction proccess even more! i really do hope he gets better!!! it makes me so sad to know he is not doing well.

Start alternating pumpkin with vaseline every hour or so until he has some good large orange stools. If he doesn't have that within 2-3 hours of having it, you are most likely dealing with an emergency situation, and will need to get to the vet asap.

Considering Lucrezia was fine when we went to work in the morning at 8am, and when we got home at 3pm, she was deathly ill, yeah, way too long. If he just sleeps, refuses treats or food, you need to get him in THEN. In the interim, follow the instructions with the pumpkin. Do you have cat lax? Use that. If you have oil, use that instead of the vaseline.
