Are the whites safe to give them them? Everyone one the net seems to say the whites are not safe, but no one says why. Is it a myth? Mine really enjoyed the egg yolk I gave them, I'd love to be able to offer them whole eggs. If you look back at the original post on the first page, the whites are okay in moderation -- in fact, a whole egg is a balanced meal. Here's an excerpt from the first post: I posted this info (in response to something on the FML) and wanted to share this with you guys I just wanted to correct a common misconception about raw eggs. They are safe for ferrets (and dogs and cats). The myth originated from the fact that raw egg whites contain an enzyme, called avidin. This enzyme sequesters biotin and makes it unavailable. However, here's why you don't have to worry. 1) Raw egg whites are only 0.05% avidin. 2) Raw egg yolks contain one of the highest concentrations of biotin found in nature. There is plenty of biotin available in the egg yolk to overcompensate for the avidin in the egg white. As long as the entire egg is fed, there are no risks of biotin deficiency. Obviously a diet of only egg whites would be an issue, but a couple raw eggs a week is definitely not dangerous in any way at all.

OOPS heres a problem. my mom believes that raw eggs will make them sick, raw meat will make them sick, and anything other then ferret kibble, will make them sick-_- i tried to explain to her that they are FERRETS and not dogs or cats and i have always wanted my ferrets to be on raw meat but my mom does not aprove and will NOT let me try to feed it to them. any help on convincing her? she is SO difficult to deal with! and will not nagotiate! Start with commercial raw diets - they are so easy to feed and mess free. My mom was totally against raw food, but I got some Nature's Variety raw chicken and showed her they are very mess free, and its just like handling raw chicken that you would cook for yourself. My mom ended up being the one who got Rolo into the bad habit of wanting to be hand-fed all his raw feed as she would feed him bit by bit and he would lick her fingers after. No one in my family has every gotten sick from handling raw meat, or getting kisses from Rolo when he has "chicken face"

my aunt and i have always fed our ferrets raw eggs as treats, and no one has ever gotten sick. i've never even worried about them becoming sick. if they'd eat it/something similar to it in the wild, i'm sure they'll adjust.

I laughed pretty hard after I read your comment about you were really po'd and trying to sound nice, because I could sense your frustration in the post! HAHA! But it's great information!! I keep forgetting to try feeding mine raw eggs. I LOVE eggs myself. Maybe I'll try that this week They'll probably just play in it and make a mess. Or Theo will think they're all just for him and drag the plate to HIS spot. He reminds me of that fish on Finding Nemo...."MYYYY BUBBLES!!"

The monsters love raw yolks, but I was always told that the whites were bad. Maybe tonight is time to try some pre cooked scrambled eggs with a dusting of shell? I think so! :-)

Why not? I scramble the white and egg together and give to them

Very interesting. So, a Ferret Casesar Salad could be egg yolk and anchovy? Just kidding, but could you give a ferret an anchovy?

Oh what a genius idea! I could just imagine making a "gourmet" meal for ferrets of raw chicken with a gorgeous caesar dressing made of egg yolk, anchovy, and salmon/olive oil! Maybe even a dusting of "parmesan cheese" (egg shell powder)...oh the ideas you have just given me!! And yes, I believe I've seen that anchovies are fine, as long as they're not treated with salt. I hate anchovies, so I'm not too sure if it's possible to find them canned without salt, but fresh ones would be excellent!

Yes fresh raw ones could certainly be fed- in moderation as they are so high in salt naturally.
