I've just gone through and reread this entire thread, whereas I'd only skimmed it before. Something here really struck me with the conversation: One factor present in today's food (both human and pet) that didn't exist until recently is the presence of GM modified grains in animal feed and human food As scary as this is, it actually makes a LOT of sense, and potentially explains a lot

Carnivores and omnivores have been eating raw eggs for HOW MANY MILLENIA, and people are now saying it's unsafe? They may be the same folks that think their food actually is from the grocery store instead of the farm. They need some good ol' country livin' to educate them.

It's the potential salmonella contamination involved. That has ALWAYS been there, which is why most of us cook our eggs. But for a carnivore- it's generally through their system before it can affect them. Which is why they were made the way they are.

My ferret looooooooved raw eggs, well, I gave him the yolk alone mostly. But then again the egg whites aren't an issue, yeah?

Give the whole egg (which is a balanced meal, especially if you feed the shell too). It's only us stupid humans who can't seem to get it right...animals know all about it. I usually whip it all up so that the egg white and yolk are well mixed. Really, if the ferret was doing things properly...it would raid a nest and get their eggs from ground nesting birds. One they would be a lot smaller than our chicken eggs and yes they would eat all they could at that time but then they may or may not hit up a nest again that season or it could be several days before they would get to gorge again. In the wild things balance themselves, when we offer it in a diet we have to this type of thing for them. Never feed more than 3 eggs in a week. I've found 1 or 2 usually a good number. I have even let them open their own eggs but found that the shell of our store eggs too hard. If you have an organic supplier or I had a supply of pigeon eggs a couple of seasons it might work better. These days our chickens are fed a diet that will create an extra hard shell to limit breakage for markets ciao

How do you include the shell of the egg? Do you crush it up first (I would imagine)?
I think the kids might be trying a new snack this afternoon when they start sniffing around for a second bowl of soupies!

I grind all my eggshells and then sprinkle some into the egg. I don't know exactly how much eggshell I sprinkle though (not a lot).

The actual amounts should be 1/2 tsp to 8 oz of food. It's actual amount is supposed to be 1/3 of a tsp to 8 oz. Two reasons for the discrepancy....1...I don't have 1/3 tsp and 2. ... ferrets require a heavier calcium load. ciao

4 of my 6 Love Yolks as I was told no egg whites. So Yolks for them and Egg White Omelet for me. This info is definitely interesting reading.
Who all feeds raw whole eggs without adverse affect? Also what's the census on hard Boiled Eggs? As I boil off an egg once a week for my Parakeets because my one like to drop eggs monthly that never hatch. Would a hard boiled egg be ok for them?

I don't know of any one on board that feds just whites. Eggs are completely balanced and can be a healthy part of a balanced diet. I do whole eggs once a week, 1 egg per ferret. Hard boiled eggs would be a good treat

Mine really enjoyed the egg yolk I gave them, I'd love to be able to offer them whole eggs.
