My fiance and I brought home our ferrets on Thursday They're doing great thus far and we love them ^___^ How do you go about requesting a mentor for raw feeding? We've yet to determine what their names will be

Yes, they are both boys And sadly, they are deciding to toy with us in telling their names. Secretive little things, lol. I do have a couple of questions. The sable one seems to 'cough' quite a bit. I read online that it's a common thing? What causes it? It makes my heart break a little bit when he coughs And any awesome potty training tricks? They're getting MUCH better since the day we brought them home but they do still use the corners of the cage. I've put kibble foods in all four corners. They'll eat the food and still poo in the corner and a couple of times have even poopied ON their food Also, any suggestions on ferret smell?

BABIES!!! Too cute! I want to steal them! Your cage looks awesome. I love that you already have a FN cage, with ramp covers and floor covering and a good litterbox not a stupid corner one! As for the pooping, I could suggest a couple tricks that seemed to help with my babies. Can you get some metal shower curtain rings? You could try taking some towels or something and wadding them up and putting them in the corners where you don't want them to poop, or even having them hang down from the ceiling in that corner. The shower curtain rings can be stuck through the fabric and hooked to the cage, so they don't move the towel away from the corner. It seems like having some kind of object in the corner helps discourage them from pooping there. Also where do they usually have accidents? Is it upstairs, and is there a litterbox up there? Sometimes babies are lazy and if the litterbox is too far away, they will just find a corner to poop or pee in. You could try having a litterbox upstairs too. Hope that helps! P.S. - I would also recommend stabbing 4 shower curtain rings through the rug you have on the floor (one in each corner) and hooking them to the cage bars. That way, the ferrets can't pull back the rug and drag it away so it no longer covers the corner. You don't want that to happen, because if the plastic pan is exposed, they may be more likely to poop there. At least, that's how my ferrets are, they are way more likely to poop on plastic pans than on the fabric, so I never want them to move the fabric away.

Like Mike said, I would put a litter box in the bottom AND top and cover the remaining corners. One of my boys (Timmy) has IBD, and when it hits him, it hits him. If I don't have a litter box in both the top AND bottom he will literally start pooping EVERYWHERE! When I have 2 boxes in there then he keeps it to the litter boxes. Also, the first thing that popped in my head for names when I saw the pics was Polar and Bear. But I like odd names. I mean, I DO have a ferret named NoName. ;D

Perfect, perfect babies. The coughing could very well be from hair in his throat. A little bit of ferretlax should help it move along when he's having a coughing attack. I also notice that you have water bottles instead of bowls, switching to bowls will allow them to get more water (especially important while they are on kibbles) and may help with hair in his throat.

Litter box bootcamp!!! ;D For now, keep them confined to a single level, and follow these intructions: holisticferret60.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=training&action=display&thread=108It may take a while, but you'll thank yourself as they get older! Also, putting food in the corners is definitely NOT a deterrent for a weasel That's how they disguise the smell of food in the wild so no other animal will steal their stash ;D

I have a 3 story cage. We found out that we had to put a litter box on each level. Then in the other corners we attached their bedding with the metal shower hooks. Have not had any accidents since then. As far as ferret smell, ditch the kibble and switch to raw. I went through the mentor program. Could not have done the switch without help. (thanks sherry)
