One of my girls slipped out of the house last night and we didn't know it. I always put them back in their cage before I go to bed and I couldn't find Ruca. I wasn't too worried because every now and then one of them will be sleeping somewhere other than their normal spots. Usually I'll just go to bed and wait for them to come out. I'm a light sleeper and I always hear if someone is running around the house.
Well I didn't hear her last night and in the morning she never reappeared. I checked everywhere through the house again and couldn't find her. Then I started worrying that maybe she had gotten outside.
We have a house for the rabbit that my husband built and I thought she might have gone in there to keep warm. Sure enough I look in and there she was sleeping in a pile of hay! I almost died.
I'm glad now that I took them outside regularly in the summer to play because she was familiar with the rabbit house. They loved to run around in there and hide. Luckily I also had put some hay in there recently. The rabbit isn't big on eating hay because he has the whole yard to graze in, but because of all the snow everything has been covered and I wanted him eating something better then just pellets.
It's amazing that she didn't freeze out there. The temp when I woke up this morning was 18 and she was all alone out there all night.( Our rabbit has free run of the yard and we always make him come in at night. He also comes in and out during the day whenever he wants.)
Well I'm just glad I found her and she was ok. SHE didn't even seem to be glad I found her! She was like, "oh, are we going in now?"

OMG!!!! I am so glad you found her! When I started reading, my first thought was "Oh, no- another baby gone missing" And yes, taking them out regularly is a really good idea. That way, they know where they are, and can hopefully either find their way back to scratch at the door(which some do), or find a warm spot to curl up in and wait.

I'm glad too. We are always so careful when we open and close doors because they are such sneaks. I blame my husband. LOL Even with the dishwasher, I always check two or three times before I start it to make sure there are no ferrets in there. They can be so quick they get into things without you seeing them.

Absolutely amazing! Pixie got out twice, and we got her back both times. Thank God she was smart and found a nice warm place for the night.

These are situations in which I take after my mother. Even though I know Kahlua is always finding new places to hide- If i can not find her by the end of the night, I panic. I cant sleep, I cant even go in my room- I just search and sometimes I search outside if I think by some weird mistake shes gotten out there, she never has. The both of mine always dart for the door, actually. Mojito got out one time, luckily it was in our old apartment and we were on the basement floor and he got out the front door (all closed in, he came toward the laundry room where I was) and playttacked a neighbor- great first impression lol. I remember once Kahlua wasnt coming out even though I squeeked her squeeky and I went out alone in the middle of the night searching for her while my fiancee (who swore he didnt see her leave while he was outside with the door open -- and his back facing it!) searched the apartment. Thankfully she was inside, he found her and called me- I was SO relieved

WoW now thats amazing with it freezing like that!! My 1st ferret Joey got out once (and I blame my roomate) he was missing for 2 days . I was so upset poor little baby out in the big scary world. On the 3rd day I was checking the mailbox when I saw 3 young boys and one was carrying a small dish like they were going to feed an animal. HMMM curouis I asked them. Find a little animal? They said yes a ferret. They told me they were sitting on the stoop just hanging out when across the street Joey came dooking and dancing to them LOL. Yeah that was Joey ,friendly to the doberman that growls at him the kitty who ignores him and 3 young boys who he doesnt know. Anyway the boy kept him in the garage and was glad he got back home cause he said he's father would kill him if he found him there . EEERRRR grrrrrrr almost killed running across the street and then by a crazed father.

Thank goodness you managed to find your little one and that she decided that it was too cold to investigate further than she did. So often little ones just keep running when they get out. They're so interested in this whole new world and they just keep following their noses. I'm so gad that you found your little traveller ciao

Thank goodness you found her! What a heart-failure inducing experience, gah. I'm so glad she stayed warm in that hutch and didn't wander farther away, maybe the cold was a blessing!

Ya know it's funny she never was the one to wander far when I took them outside. Zephyr is much more adventurous and is hard to keep up with. Ruca would investigate but she seemed to like to stay in and around the rabbits house and the tortoises yard. She just seems much more cautious.
Last night all three of them were safe and sound in their cage. I even put them to bed early just for my own peace of mind.
