How do you tell if a ferrets bladder is too full? I am waiting for my vet to call me back. Wally a ferret I recently got from the spca, has to have his bladder expressed. He has peed on his own. But I am worried it is not enough, considering, my vet expressed almost a cup full from him yesterday. I tried the techinique the shelter lady showed me, but nothing happened. Maybe I am just freaking out for nothing.

I've used a warm bath and gentle (crap how do you describe it.....squeezing....it's not, so don't do that.... ) Try using the method you were shown in some warm bathwater. See if you can get him to go that way. I've had to express a couple of fuzzes and have used that method a few times. Poor Porthos, I just had to give him his Metro ciao

The way she showed me doesn't make any sense. Considering their bladder in below the penis isn't it. All he is doing with what she showed me is pooping. I gently massages in between his legs what feels like could be a bladder. It doesn't feel full or distended or anything. I am still waiting for the blasted vet to call me back.

HELP!

Well A vet called back. I guess she is my vets on call vet. She is a horse doctor. But anyway she said the way I was shown although not the best, will work. But he doesn't feel like he has a balloon in his abdomen. So that is good. She said the bladder is between his belly button and his legs. Does this sound right? The picture doesn't come up. But I did find another one and it looked about right. He has peed on his own. So maybe it is healing itself. He has a sore looking belly button, but not too bad. I put some cream on it that the vet said was ok. I am just panicking I think. He was chasing the dogs around, so that is good. He just got a drink of water. He is not too sure about water bowls though. Ughh... poor guy, he has definately been abused. He cowers when you go to pick him up or even touch him. Ok obviously I am not feeling in the right spot, cause he just peed. Yay!!! A big pee....

Oh, that's great that he's expressed some on his own! And yes, they're bladder would be between the penis and hips. If when you palpate he shows discomfort, then he's likely not voiding enough on his own. Assuming cats and ferrets have the same reaction that is! I got used to checking the bladder on our cat who used to suffer from crystals.

Thank you all very much. He is not showing discomfort. I have seen a ferret who can not pee. I do not wish to see that again. He would cry. This was before anyone really knew anything about adrenal disease. He had to be PTS. But Wally's bladder is so stretched right now, that I am not sure he knows when he has to go. But when he does go, it is a normal sized ferret pee. It just he is walking along and all of a sudden pees. He does the same thing for pooping too. Just goes where he is and then moves. He can't rotate his left hind leg. So there is something going on in the hip area. He has an appointment for an xray on wednesday.

Sounds like he at least is starting to get some sensation even though he's not actually aware. Minion is like that too in regards to his defecation. The damage that was done when they wouldn't treat his prolapse and the resulting surgery to repair that damage has caused permanent damage. Your little fellow might actually heal, given time and love. Sounds to me that he's doing very well. I had a wee boy who had been kicked and thrown against a wall (the lady, I use the term loosely actually admitted to this), he had this adorable peg legged gait....we called him Porthos the Pirate His other issues repaired but the gait, it remained. ciao

He's peed twice on his own today so far. Yeah I think Wally is always gonna have a wobbly gait. My other ferrets are doing good with him though so far. I have a friendly crew. He tries to play a little with them. He wonders around smelling everything, checking out everything. He ate a huge breakfast this morning. Had a really good drink too. His bladder doesn't feel full or swollen when compared to my other guys. So I think his sensation is coming around. He does better when he wonders though, seems to make him pee on his own. So he is not caged, but in the ferret room with a gate put up. He really clenches when you pick him up. Kinda how a ferret reacts when they know they are going to be bathed. I think he's been thrown, but I will never know for sure. There is no one looking for him. I've checked all the ads and phoned the vet office that is near walmart.

Exercise will be to his benefit. The more he moves around the more he works the nerves and puts pressure on his bladder. It's much better for him if he manages on his own as a certain amount of damage occurs when expressing a bladder and infections are common. I hope you continue to see improvement. ciao
