when I rescued Mimzy she'd been banished to the rabbit cage (With the rabbit inside) she'd gotten a "bath" just before they relinquished her but she still reeked, her fur was matted and her ears were full of black wax. She was severely dehydrated, skinny and weak (which was why they were giving her up-she wasn't fun for the kid anymore and the Mom told the kid it was normal for ferrets to just "swim" when placed on a floor) Sorry, I'm digressing. Thankfully she plowed into a plate of raw the very first night and things changed for her immensely. During her intake grooming I discovered still matted fur, long nails and of course black ear gunk. I use q-tips, moistened with my saliva. swabbed her outer ears and then massaged them by rubbing deep next to her skull and rolling my fingers together upward. She pushed her noggin in to my fingers, squeaked and groaned with pleasure as even more black gunk was worked to the outer ear. It was nasty, smelly, greasy, yucky gunk. I was amazed at the amount of crud that kept coming out. But Mimzy certainly seemed happy to get it out!

Okay. The vet suggested revolution, any experience with that?

Someone mentioned teeth earlier in the thread. I can't get my fuzzbutts to hold still for a brushing so I decided to try C.E.T. cat chewables. They beg for their "treat" each night when heading back to the cage. It made my job of getting them rounded up a lot easier and does a good job for the teeth.

Okay. The vet suggested revolution, any experience with that? YUP! I use it. The Puppy and kittens size and use two ferrets per vial. I don't use it every month any more - instead once every 6 months. I don't have problems with fleas, so feel that 6 month applications are working for me. your application needs may differ. I feel that since it is designed to enter their blood stream, it is safer than other topicals. Some labels on other topicals want you to prevent the animal from licking the site. Revolution has been very effective for my ferrets. Cheers, Kim

Do all ferrets clean their buddies ears, or do you have to watch and see whether they do it or not?

Neither method for clipping worked for me. I find that the easiest way to clip my guy is when he is asleep in his dead sleep. Takes about 20 seconds and done and he has no idea it happened.

Old thread, but I have a nail clipping question. My 2 ferrets were already old when I got them and had zero grooming the first 4 & 7 years of their lives. I've tried EVERYTHING suggested to clip their nails and groom their ears, but the only way that works is to scruff them and get it done fast. Is this okay? No one else seems to do this, so now it bothers me. I read that to initially grow a bond with a ferret you would scruff them and use a damp rag to gently pet their face to simulate their mother cleaning them, figured it would be in the same boat?

I have to scruff my ferrets to do their nails. I give them a little bit of treat first (salmon oil, or an FDR treat cut up). Then I have my husband scruff them while I quickly clip their nails. Unscruff, then I give them more treat, loves, and cuddles. None of mine are upset over the experience, just not thrilled It'd be great if they'd let me. However, all of them came to me "slightly used" and none of them had had their grooming kept up regularly. I also don't do a dangling scruff, I have my husband scruff them & have them laying in his lap a bit, makes a huge difference with mine.

Okay good! Glad I'm not being "mean"!!! We too have them sort of laying and use treats! They seem to be slowly getting used to it, so maybe I can work up to just using some oil on the belly eventually.

Start by just giving them some oil on the belly and let them have at it Work with them by getting them used to handling their feet while they are on their back licking the oil, then over time start by clipping even one nail and so on.

My 3 month old Oxley is still in the process of being litter box trained when he has the run of the house. Almost every couple of days he urinates and either lays in it or rolls in it while he is playing. I know I am not supposed to wash him so when it is not too bad I take a damp rag and wipe him down. When its all over him and dripping off I run him under the tap as fast as I can then dry him. He has a very musky urine odor to him all the time now. First, is this cleaning method ok for his fur and skin? Second, any other cleaning options? Third, how often can I let him play in the tub if I do not use soap? Thanks!!

They can play in tap water without soap as much as they like, so plain water baths can be as common as needed. A dig box of long grain rice might also help absorb oils or other bodily fluids he has on his coat.

Yay! I'm super excited! (dance) He doesn't seem to mind the water and maybe I can get him to play with some toys in it. I have been looking into making a dig box with rice, I will get on that next week. Thank you!!

The main thing to worry about with rice is that they don't get the "instant" kinds of rice that expands in water. If they eat any of that it will easily cause a life threatening blockage.

I saw that on the forum before too I believe, thank you so much for reminding me. On a side note about Oxley and water, he loves it! I cracked the door to the shower to get some air and in he came and he got feisty! He has done that twice with me now and during the day I leave the door open and he takes his toys in there and plays in the water left from the morning shower. We haven't had bathtub time yet only because he has been urine free lately. lol
