Ty has a painful stomach which really worries me since he has gotten crystals before. He hasnt had them since switching to grain free canned and then raw. We will be moving soon and my mom has been busy and stressed so she started feeding him kibble, canned and raw but mostly kibble (she got a good deal on some higher quality but not grain free kibble). She has been adding water to it but dont grains contribute to crystals? He also threw up today. I dont know if there is something else going on or if its crystals or what. Any advise? Anything I can do to prevent/get rid of crystals? I gave him some grain free canned with water added to flush him out. My mom will no longer feed him kibble.

I'm afraid that if it is crystals, he's going to need treated. Yes, the kibble and manufactured food will start this whole process over again. Once they have to deal with crystals it's almost like they're susceptible. My understanding is antibiotics are probably going to be necessary and whatever else usually that needs to be done. Is he urinating? Is there blood in the urine? ciao

If he's having abdominal pain, I think I'd be taking him in to the vet's. If he does develop a urinary blockage, it can rupture pretty fast.

Come to think of it he did sit in the litter pan for a while and all he did was pee. So maybe he was having trouble. No there was no blood in his urine (I dont think). I will have to bring him to the vet tomarrow morning then.

And this was all today. He was fine yesterday. My mom was brushing him. She said she brushed his stomach and he wasnt in pain. I didnt see if having a hard time peeing or anything. So I think we caught it early.

If it's even slightly painful for him to void, he's going to start trying to avoid it until he can't anymore. Def. keep an eye on what's happening in the litter box. If he is unable to void, I'd be taking him in to the e-vet tonight.

i'd take him to the vet if he has trouble urinating or if you hear whimpering, running frantically from one corner to the other and not urinating. backing up several times, nothing coming out, etc. and no more kibble.

His stomach stopped hurting so my mom didnt want to take him to the vet. Im wondering if it was something else. He did throw up yesterday and after that was when he was meowing when I pressed on his stomach. My mom thinks he may of been constipated and not straining to pee. Maybe it was all coincidence. I dont know. I will try to get my mom to take him to the vet anyway. I still worry and hes due for a check up anyway. And she will no longer feed him kibble. Just grain free canned and raw.

The new kibble doesn't happen to be Zupreem does it? The only reason that I ask is because when I was feeding Zupreem back in the day, I had accidently gotten the none-grain free one and both Kahlua and Mojito started having darker/more concentrated urine that crystalized in the pan much quicker than any other kibble I'd had them on in the past. They were both straining to deficate and urinate, and had much more gas (backing into the corner like they were going to go, loud fart or just farty smell and then going about their business) During the mixing period of switching them to Evo (before we learned about raw) Kahlua's problem cleared up entirely. Mojito's, however, didnt clear up until the Zupreem was completely gone from his diet, I didn't make the connection till later but for a while I thought he was having problems with crystals. I could be totally off the mark, but maybe its a reaction to the kibble? I do agree though, that either way he should be seen by a vet asap stomach pains are never good and even if it is a reaction to the kibble, since hes had crystals in the past it may be more serious this go around

Its been a really, incredibly long time (well not to people with good memeory, but for my memory it has been) but if I remember correctly it was because there was too much of some vitamin (coulda been a mineral) in their diet from the food + the daily supplements they used to take... Maybe the felidae or holistic select (or a combination of the two) has too much of the same thing? Sorry my answer seems so vauge... I wish I could remember better. Again, I think the vets the best idea for him atm if the stomach pains/difficulty urinating presist.

Ty's a kitty cat right? (assuming so from the fact that he was meowing)
If he's tried to pee but can't he needs to see a vet NOW. I work at a cat/dog vet and male cats who have a history of crystals can actually get blocked. This means their urethra ( tube where the pee comes out ) actually gets blocked with crystal sludge. I have personally stayed after the clinic was closed to help unblock a cat (they have to be under anesthetic because a tube has to go up their man parts and the crystals have to be flushed out) and it's not pretty. But it has to be done ASAP as it is a medical emergency and can kill them if it goes untreated.
Dont mess with crystals in male cats! See a vet to be sure.
EDIT: I just remembered something else - a tender belly and vomiting can actually be symptoms of a urinary stone in cats too. Cats get 2 types of crystals - struvite (which is from too many minerals in cat food - most kibbles have been designed these days to prevent struvite crystals but some cats are just prone to them genetically no matter what they eat) and calcium oxalate crystals - which have become more common these days. Calcium oxalate crystals do not dissolve and if they arent flushed out of the system they turn into stones which need to be surgically removed.
So definitely see a vet - get a urinalysis run, and a bladder xray.

Yes hes a cat I havent seen him having a hard time peeing since. I dont even know if he was actually having a hard time peeing or if he was constipated. He gets struvite crystals. Im trying to get my mom to bring him to a vet but because his stomach is not hurting anymore she doesnt feel like he needs to. We are going to move soon so she doesnt want to spend extra money if she doesnt need to. I will still try to convince her though.
