Aw, such a happy kitty Is it just me, or does the ferret in the first picture (Kiwi? ) have blue eyes?

That looks like they are really enjoying themselves! The way they dig in the sand box is far different than the rice or paper box, isn't it?

The kitten and ferret pics are so cute! With the sand, do they throw it a lot or potty in it at all? I switched mines shredded paper to a larger deeper tote so they can't drag raw in there so easily and now have my aquarium open to put something else in and liked the sand idea but wasn't sure if it'd be really messy.

Yeah, I'd be worried it'd make a big mess

I put the sand and rice in pretty big storage contains and filled them up about half way. It's a stretch for them to get out and they need a boost from the outside to get back in (I just use boxes for them to climb on) so most of the contents stay in the box. The rice on the floor in the picture is mostly from the cat.
I haven't had a problem with any of the ferrets using the dig boxes for a litter box but the cat decided the rice box was a giant bathroom for him. I suppose since cats don't use dig boxes, he couldn't think what else it was for. I didn't even let him see the sand box to make sure that didn't happen again. I just keep the lids on both boxes when he's in there. However, I have heard about some ferrets using their rice box as a litter box- not sure with sand but I'm sure it's happened.
