i want to try a recipe that involves egg whites, could i just give the egg yolks to the ferrets? the yolks don't have anything bad right? or do they need the whole egg?

The whole egg is a complete meal. But there is no reason I can see to not give them the yolk, as long as it is not a regular thing. If you were going to be giving them egg yolks say weekly or something, I'd say nah you want to give them the whole thing so as not to unbalance the diet. But once here and once there should not be a problem. It's like a treat.

I used to give my dogs eggs as a treat but it always gave them diarrhea. Does it have this effect on ferrets? Would it be a good idea to mix in some pumpkin maybe?
Or, when you feed egg, do you blend up the whole thing, shell and all? Seems like that could help with the stool quality and provide calcium?

I give two whole eggs that my 3 split a week. I usually mix it in with boneless meats or soupy. There is no need to eliminate the egg white. Like Katt said, its completely balanced and safe to eat

I've always given my dogs raw eggs, even when I was feeding kibbles (probably the only good thing that was in his bowl ) You might want to give an extra bone meal with the dog and see if that helps. You can try pumpkin but I would be tempted on that day just to give a bone meal and see what happens. If it still happens mix some pumpkin in his dinner too. As far as egg yolks for the ferret...go for it (and yes you will get looser stools and if they're little pigs, like my Napoleon was...their poop gets rather yellowish and they fart alot ). It's the egg white that causes the issues. It should never be fed alone, the yolks aren't a problem. I've made angel food cakes a number of times and all the kids (cat, ferret and dog) benefit from the dozen that goes into the cake (only the whites are used for the cake). I've had no issues when feeding yolks a number of times consecutively only when I feed the whole egg without the shell (then I get rat tail ) and that's over a long period of time ciao

Jackie she is using the egg whites to make food for herself and wants to feed them the yolk rather than wasting it. Mikey yes eggs do give them runny poops but not horribly as long as they are not given every day. Think organ poops only slimier I believe. My boys won't touch egg. Or rather, Koda won't so I never bothered with Kenai.

Just give it a go, see if they like it.

Thanks for the info Heather! And xclairex Koda will also eat it if it is disguised in soup, but not on it's own or poured over meats. Silly things!
