Yeah, he had a taste of soupies so he'd start eating, I had Cliff empty the syringe into the spoon, and mix it with the soup. He tasted it, then chowed down. Next spoon of just soup? Brat wouldn't touch it He wanted the sweet in with it ;D I don't care, he took it! And started in on his turkey necks as soon as he went back into the cage

YAY! Pediapred sure is a winner flavor wise, hahaha. And Boris feels better and ate some food on his own. You go, Boris!

Jennifer- out of curiosity, how much of the KMR can I give him? He's decided he really likes it, and I'm giving about a tbsp a day right now.

I would have no issue with you giving him a Tablespoon with each of his 2 feedings. I'd mix the KMR with the food so he eats the food. even if he's on chunks rather than grind, the more real food he eats the better.
The problem with KMR (or whatever soup they decide to like) is that some ferrets that get finicky about food refuse to go back to regular food. If you put the KMR with meat, he'll still be licking the meat juice & flavors even if he's not quite up to gnawing down a bunch of meat yet. Hopefully, he'll soon regain his regular taste preferences.
I figured that the pred would be flavored and not so bad. There's nothing better than medicine when it's really needed. I'm hoping Boris will start picking up pretty quickly now.
Go Boris!!!! -jennifer

I'm so glad that Boris is feeling better and is eating again. Give the boy a big hug and tell him I want to see him all fat and sleek soon. I do know how difficult it is when a little one decides that eating is optional (Yuri is driving me crazy ) ciao

Thanks all I'll def. give him the KMR with his feedings. He'll certainly enjoy it, I'm sure ;D And guess who's chowing down on turkey neck chunks as I sit here typing I think I am going to keep giving a tbsp of the KMR for a while yet. Poor lad has lost almost 1/2 his body weight, so I'm thinking the extra nutrients certainly wouldn't go amiss right now.

I have some good info on ferret GI that need to be posted as soon as I get time.
It includes info (dosing included) on the use of imuran rather than pred. for long-term use with IBD.
-gotta run, -jennifer

those medicines are so disgusting. one of my ferrets was just like boris. i had to switch to pediapred because the generic was too stressful for him. he wouldn't swallow it and he would spit it out all over. Ferrets are less likely to fight you on the pediapred over the generic stuff. the generic has alcohol in it.

Imuran is not a generic version of pediapred. It's a completely different medicine, and I hear that most ferrets are generally accepting of the imuran. Imuran is supposed to be less toxic to ferrets and more effective than IBD if it's dosed correctly.
Pediapred is OK short term, but longer term, the imuran is supposed to be better. My boys were on pediapred fo abbout 3 years, and I never have any issues. But if there's something better that's less toxic, tha's a good thing.
Sherry, please look for my post out on IBD/Imuran so you can sticky it. If I bury the info here, nobody will find it.

@ Jennifer/sherry I thought he was previously on generic pediapred & then switched to brand name. But now I realize that I was thinking of another conversation that I was having w/ a different ferret owner on FB. Oops!

That's ok, not a problem ;D And this is the first time he's ever been on it, which is why I was so worried about the stress of maybe having to syringe it to him, little brat that he is

OK, let's hope Boris goes through his course of meds and is ready for some supplements (small amounts) I'm hoping we can find a way to keep him off the meds. forever. But, if he does get another flare-up that's not responding, I definitely recommend the Imuran. I just got back from the IFC Symposium, and those who are using the Imuran are getting really good results! This seems to be an improvement in treatment -jennfer
