Hello everyone, not sure if this is the right place to post this but it can be moved if appropriate.
I came up with a method of stopping the above that work really well with me and figured it must be common knowledge. Another post got me thinking that maybe it wasn't so here it is.
Back when I first got my fuzzbuts they would consistantly poop on their side of the baby gate in their rooms. I agree with most theories that this is a territorial thing as this is where that huge strange pink ferret who never poops anywhere comes in to play, groom and bring food.
What I did was to work with their natural instincts instead of against them. I took a big cheap blanket that I got at the Salvation Army and put it in their cage for a week so that they would sleep on it and get it covered in their scent. Then I folded it up and put one edge slightly on my side of the doorframe, locked the babygate in place and viola!! A new sleeping spot and no more territorial bathroom displays.
The only drawback is to remember to check the blanket for sleeping ferrets before stepping over the gate (if you are tall enough). No surprises yet but you have to be careful because as you all know any layer of material is fair game for a nap.
Now I've only tested this with gated doorways but it could probably work with non-gated doorways if you can figure out a method to prevent your fuzzbuts from moving the blanket.

Never thought of doing that ;D I just put down newspaper in the same method you've used for the blanket! That, and a litter box for those who prefer that to paper

Hey Sherry, I tried exactly that at first but figured that it really didn't stop the problem, it just made it easier to clean up. The blanket stops that and they are in easy reach for a snuggle if they are napping

I've been doing this as well. I put my girls favorite blankies in front of the doorways/gate and it definitely cuts down on the accidents

You guys obviously don't have a Thor who has no problem pooping in his blankies and anyone elses as well. For the most part it, I agree, this method does indeed work very well, I've used it in a number of places that I don't want poopies....it works unless you've got a waardenburg brat like Thor who feels that poop is all part of the decor Stepping into the blanky you don't "just" avoid ferrets ciao

Well...if you have a ferret who loves sleeping in poop then this strategy is not the best to try . Just remember, it takes all kinds to make the world go round.

LoL I have visions of ferrets using blankets as escape ropes kind of like a prince scaling a tower using the bed sheets for escape lol I have used this method in the past with erring kits or ferrets who have come in stressed out and afraid and who would just poop every where ( same idea just slightly diffrent ) I used to use a snuggle toy ( even used wait for it stuffed toys and blankets ) washed then then in the final rinse added vanilla extract ( the stuff you use for baking ) result ferrets who associate the smell with safe sleeping/ comfort areas if they ever used a spot I did not want them too I simply diluted some vanilla extract in water and sprayed the spot result cheap natural deodoriser less accidents and vanilla scented fuzzies ( from sleeping in vanilla beds lol ) take care bye for now Bev aka crazy lady

I have a big cardboard roll right inside the door of their room, Pandora loves to poop there! They can roll it out of the way but for the most part it works. I used to have a larger one that could be wedged there but it got icky.

Bev, what a lovely idea. Vanilla scented anything is very nice. Bed sheets, pacifiers, fuzzies, and on and on . . Thanks for the idea!

Freya poops/pees right in front of the door... Marley and Soxx? They go right next to the toilet ;D Smart lil buggers! Now if only they would go on the side that isn't next to the wall & is therefore easier to clean up...

The vanilla Idea is interesting may need to try that. Anyone have their ferret poop on the ledge of their tub...routinely?? Our newest addition Nyx does this daily and sometime twice. i thought this to be very strange!! I hate the door way poos and pees, especially now when you aren't sure if it is simply melted snow or you should change your socks!! LOL I am in the middle of making reusable pee pads, using the same materials you would for cloth diapers. Hope it works!

Anyone have their ferret poop on the ledge of their tub...routinely?? Yup. Lucrezia does, and Sinnead did. But they generally hung their butts over the edge of the tub and went IN it
