Oscars and Discus are both in the New World cichlid family. And Oscars are awesome too! But you could probably only get away with two in a 130, and even then, they might not enjoy each others' company. And they would limit what other species you could keep too. But they have such personality all their own.
Some of the African Cichlids end up huge, too. We used to have a 300+ gallon African display tank in the break room at work, and someone ended up adopting the biggest adults for their indoor pond because they wouldn't fit anywhere else.

Goingpostal, if you head over to Aquaria Central's forums, they have so many knowledgeable people that could help advise you on how to stock the tank based on what traits you tell them you want...South American cichlids (like your oscars and jack dempseys and angels) are generally bigger and more territorially aggressive so you'd be looking at getting just a couple big fish with huge personalities, African cichlids have amazing colors and they're aggressive in a different way, you basically want to balance out a couple of large groups so they have many targets and have lots of rock and cave work to break up the space. A lot of the africans are mouth brooders too, my mom's tank always has a couple running around with babies popping in and out of their mouths. Too cute! This is my 75 gallon...It has rainbowfish (bosemani, red, and turquoise), siamese algea eaters, a school of corydoras, khuli loaches, some black neons, a breeding pair of albino bristlenose plecos (although the fry always gets eaten by everyone else), and a couple of bamboo shrimp. I'm running an Odyssea canister filter as well as an Aquaclear HOB that I leave empty of media becausae it's perfect for propagating cuts of my land plants. And I have a ton of live plants (sessilflora, crypts, rotalla, watersprite, etc)...every couple months I put a batch up on craigslist just to give my fish some swimming room . I just use a couple of shop lights for lighting, no CO2 or ferts beyond what the fish do. And here's my 5.5 gallon betta tank, it contains Humperdink the betta, a handful of cherry shrimp, a zebra nerite, and some red ramshorns including one huge (quarter-sized) old one I've named Cornelius. It's got a little mini-Hagen Elite filter, I find Humperdink and the shrimp racing in the current all the time. Humperdink refuses to pose. Mikey, here's a shot of Cornelius for ya since you mentioned breeding the ramsorns as well...I noticed his size and named him over a year ago, and he keeps going! Also, have you googled malaysian trumpet snails? They might be the spotty conical guys you're trying to ID, they're fairly common and really awesome for keeping your substrate mixed and plant roots healthy . *Edit* And I just noticed he's hanging off the cave in the picture above too.

Ya'll tanks are really impressive!! I have two betta's... Kai-lan #1 who is my classroom pet (I'm a preschool teacher) she is red-ish and lives in a gallon and a half critter keeper? It had to be plastic to be able to be in the classroom... She has got to be the fattest betta I have ever seen. We rotate who feeds her her 4 little "balls" twice a day and has gravel and fake plants.... I don't have a fliter or pump or anything like that but would love to know if I could switch Kai-lan#1 habitat to having live plants..it would be really cool and educational for the kids. Kai-lan#2 lives at home in a glass bowl that holds a gallon of water. HE was purchased because my 3 year old had a meltdown one morning after a long weekend as I was bringing Kai-lan#1 back to school. She threw herself to the ground in the middle of the parking lot at 730am with other parents (some of whose children are in my class) looking on...here's Abigail screaming, flailing around, drooling, crying...ugh... so that night she picked out Kai-lan#2. I'm not very knowledgeable about fish...what is the gallon to fish ratio? Should Kai-lan #1 and #2 have bigger homes? What is needed to use natural plants? In the event of Kai-lan #1 comming home permanantly, how much room would they need to be in a habitat together? Do they need lights and pumps and stuff? I clean their bowl/keeper about once every two weeks when the water starts looking a bit dingy...
