My ferret started acting weird today and I was wondering if anyone might know what was wrong? He has been throwing up yellow foamy liquid several times today, he is drinking but not eating. He seems to be trying to poop but has not been able to so far, and everytime i try to feed him mushy food he starts gagging and then he runs away and hides again. He is sleeping and hiding more than usual and will not play. Should I take him to a vet immediately or is there a way to solve his problem? Thank you for your help, its greatly appreciated

most likely a blockage. Take him to vet ASAP. give pumpkin (canned pure & pureed pumpkin) also vaseline petroleum jelly (the white one) give him a tablespoon of that. Repeat every few hours. But take him to vet asap. Pet ER if possible.

You cannot wait with a blockage. Your ferret can die very quickly. Do not attempt to treat at home for days and wait it out. You will risk losing him with each passing hour. They go downhill very fast.

Since he's been like this for a while, he needs to get in ASAP. While he *might* pass it with enough pumpkin and vaseline, I'd not be risking it. This IS an emergency, and he might not make it to morning if he can't pass the blockage.

In the interim, keep pushing the pure pumpkin and vaseline, alternating them every couple of hours, and keep him hydrated, even if you have to give it by syringe. It's very important. Please keep us updated?

Sorry, I agree with the others...no poop....get to a vet ASAP. It takes no time at all for these wee ones to go septic and just fade away. If you're getting nothing in him except water, you need a vet as soon as you can locate one. This is an emergency, it does indeed sound like a blockage. Good luck, please keep us updated ciao

Call around to ER vets - even if thy aren't experience with ferrets they have SOME knowledge about mammals and at least can give sub q fluids. When Pixie had a blockage I called te ER and (being in tears) they took her in. They gave her pain meds which helped relax her a ton and sub q fluids to keep her hydrated. She passed the blockage several hours later.

I hope she found a vet. I am terrified of blockages. My vet told me that blockages are the #1 surgery that he performs on ferrets.

He has been at the vet all day, they did a barium test? And it gets stuck at one spot and will not go through, they are doing surgery right now but because he is so dehydrated they do not know if he will make it or not. I'm so scared thank you everyone for telling me to bring him in if it wasn't for u guys he would have been dead already. I will know tonight if he makes it through.

Does anyone know if ferrets can normally survive after this? (surgery, blockage?, dehydration)
