Soo I have some questions I found a place that has PORK BRAINS! (yum ;D) Anyway, brain, like heart, is extremely rich in taurine (maybe even more? Can't remember). Soo, the questions Do brains count as organ meat? And If I could not find any heart (temporarily, not permanently) would feeding brains twice a week be sufficient to cover the ferrets taurine needs?

I believe that the brain is an organ meat. As noted on the site Journal of Neurochemistry that taurine content in the brain is very high. Now, there are a number of factors that bring that content down (as you're aware). How old the actual brain is (the older the less there is), how fresh it is and how it's been preserved. There is no conversation as to how pork brains compare to other mamalia and does it have a higher taurine level than say beef but it does say "Taurine appears to be one of the most abundant amino acids constituents in brain tissue of vertebrates (levi ata...1967; Jacobson and Smith 1968) onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1471-4159.1979.tb05251.x/abstract I cannot read the whole abstract as I'm not a member but I'm sure they don't compare it to the heart ;D . I would say you possibly could. I'm not sure how often I would do this. The highest rate of taurine is seemingly in mice and rats ciao

Wow that's cool you found some, I am interested in this question too!
My fuzzies LOVE brains, their favorite part of a mouse is the head! I think it's because they are going after the brain... ??

The heads supply them with every nutrient they need. They are a completely balanced diet. It's a little disconcerting in my house as a meal of mice, find 9 or 10 little headless corpses, lined up on the top shelf of the one ferret nation. I don't know which one of the brats takes morbid pleasure in this but.... they all get eaten in the end but the first thing to go is always the heads, the tails are dental floss at the end of the meal ;D ciao

Ours usually go for the head first as well- except Lucrezia. She prefers the legs and feet ;D And Jackie- great find!

The place is looking into how much kidney would cost (has to order by the case), and I saw frog legs on their site with no price (maybe really expensive but I really wanna try them). He seems to supply quite a few raw feeders too (he talked about what other owners buy). I hope my kids like brain more than they like liver and heart

Yeah, liver is hard enough to clean up after it's started to dry. Can't even begin to imagine dried on brains

I don't know....I think that it's much easier to clean up than dried up intestines and fecal matter Brains don't seem to stick as hard ciao

Minion was terribly upset with me. I gave him a rat or half a rat, he can't eat the whole thing in one sitting and it just stinks . i gave him the butt half. He wasn't impressed, he kept looking for the head When I left the rat was being flung around the cage by it's tail , while Minion showed his immense displeasure by throwing a fertish tantrum.... Brainz. is best ciao
