This can REALLY help you bond to a new ferret. It relaxes them and teaches them than being handled by people is relaxing. It can take some time to get them to actually relax, but if you do this for a few min here, a few min there, daily they will warm up quickly. The younger they are the easier it seems to be - they are more willing to be "babied." I was having a hard time bonding with Kenai when he came home. We just weren't finding that "click." I saw a video someone linked on a lecture by a ferret vet (Gandolfi I think his name was? ) so I started doing this and after a few times he began to really enjoy it. It made an immediate difference - he now viewed me as "mommy ferret." The differnce was astounding and we began to really bond. I do it to him regularly still and he looves it (as you can see!). It is very relaxing for him, and me! I have had a lot of luck with this, so I hope that it can be of use to someone else to! Also, it helps show them that being scruffed is not a bad thing or something to fear, and that hands are nice. Ignore my voice I get nervous on tape. You want to be sitting down so they can lay in your lap btw, not laying down so they can sit in your lap.

Nice demo. Well done. That's something I've done with my guys for a long time now. One of the rescue directors showed me how, many years ago. I use it to calm my new rescues, and my sickies, this along with a ferret massage that involves a total body massage. These are two massages that I've used with my guys. You can also take a facial brush and while holding your little one just like you are there Katt, and gently brush their face, short firm strokes (not tickly ones or your ferret will turn into jaws). You gently stroke their ears and faces, just like momma fuzz used to, when she cleaned them. This is particularly calming to baby ferrets...but it often works very well with hard core biters too. ciao
