Back to Adrenal, I was wondering...should you test them yearly for it? Otherwise, if they only show one not-so-symptom-like symptom, how will you know?

Most people don't test for adrenal. Starting treatment, even if they don't have adrenal, doesn't hurt the ferret. You can try a monthly shot of Lupron and see it the symptom goes away.
For a lot of cases, testing for adrenal is more expensive than treatment itself. If you can afford to test, that's awesome. But for so many, it just isn't feasible to annually test.

I'm pretty sure shipping is expensive too. They have to be shipped quickly and on ice I believe. And some people are out of the USA. Plus, some people have a LOT of fuzzies, so to test every year would be a nightmare. Add that cost to the normal vet visits, vaccinations, medications, possible emergencies. Yikes!

Wow, that price is ridiculous. Where does most of the cost come from? Shipping, lab prep?

It's because we are in Canada, and they have to use a "middle man" to ship any blood products to the US. It's really complicated not to use them, frequently get rejected at the border, and all in all, even though the cost is ludicrous, it's just much easier using the go between.

I believe that most of the cost is shipping a toxic substance across the border. My vet only charges me $30 for a blood draw. So, from there?? ciao

Oh wow...That is a crazy price! Alright, I'll keep an eye on Lincoln and see how he does the next while and if he doesn't calm down I'll give my vet a call and see what prices she does for treatment.
=]
I can't get over that price, that's almost the annual price for our 4 ferrets vaccinations+office visit lol

Really Heather? What I'd posted was the explanation the vet gave me when I asked. I was going to join up with that distemper program a while back, but would still have wound up paying the "middle man" in spite of the blood draw, etc, being covered by being in the program.

Sherry, are you referring to the Mongo distemper titer study? Or some other distemper program?

Yeah, I've been meaning to find out exactly what they'll cover and what they won't. I need to print out some info for my vet. I definitely want to test Pixie, since she just turned 2 and was vaccinated around 4 months old.

That was the explanation my vet gave me. She said that they had to pay an "endangerment fee" to get such things as blood work and such across the border. Middleman works too, because that's what it is...you're paying to have someone handle the blood to get it across the border....basically hiring a broker. ciao
