TLDR; If anyone has experience with IBD or lymphoma in their ferret, what were the symptoms? What made you / your vet catch on?
Hey everyone, I brought one of my ferrets, Fax, into the vet on ear mite suspicions since I noticed a lot of scratching and a little scab (turns out no ear mites, just a mild yeast infection clearing up fast with meds) but the vet visit resulted in something a LOT more concerning being noticed.
He has what could be swollen lymph nodes under his arms and legs.
The vet mentioned that he's a little over weight, probably because of the winter causing them to eat more and move less, and that *maybe* its just fat deposits that will go away once he loses some fat. I was thinking it could potentially be the strain the ear infection put on his system, and that once the infection clears up the lymph node swelling will go down. But I did some reading, and as it turns out IBD in ferrets can turn into lymphoma.
When fax was a kit, during his first two sheds he puked a few times but was totally fine afterwards and vet checks always resulted in them complimenting what great health he was in. He puked again about a year later during a shed, so it was chalked up to him being dramatic when he's stressed, probably the hair causing an upset tummy or him panicking over a hair caught in his mouth or throat. Then again, AFTER shedding season was already finished, about a week and a half ago he puked up his barely digested food. I figured it was stress causing an upset stomach again, and that treating his ear would take care of it.
But... After reading about IBD and it's link to lymphoma, his potentially swollen lymph nodes, and the seemingly random puking recently? I'm extremely concerned.
He may have had a mild case of IBD that flew under the radar, that has now developed into lymphoma.
The vet said its extremely unlikely to be lymphoma since he's so young (he's only two and a half) and since he's raw fed. I just can't help connecting dots that may not even be connected and freaking out over the worst case scenario ðŸ˜
