Anyone have experience with treating a dogs paw pad when its been cut open? It's not very deep or very long.. but its enough that if he does more than walk it keeps comming back open and bleeding. I called my normal vet and he just said to clean it out and put some vasaline on it. He said stitches can do more harm than good on a paw pad and he wouldnt want to suture it unless it was pretty bad.
I've got it wrapped with some gauze and coban for now.. I'm wondering if some steri strips might help? or do you think I could use some cornstarch to clot it? If it keeps bleeding I could take him in tomarrow, but I'm already leaving in an hour to take anks back to the vet in evansville and that'll take the rest of the day.

try wrapping it and then taping it around his paw, that way it won't come off easily, and perhaps put some cornstarch in the wrap, to keep it clotted.

Well the dressing isnt comming off, its just if he tries to do more than walk or jump on/off the couch it starts bleeding and it'll bleed through the dressing. I think i'll try some cornstarch to see if that helps.
Thanks

try keeping him confined to a small room, like the a bathroom or give him something to keep him occupied.

If you can manage to keep it covered, and keep him confined for a day or so(walks on leash only), it should start healing well on it's own. If it's deep enough to start bleeding again when he jumps or anything else, you won't likely be able to artificially clot it.

Have you got access to some horse wrap? I use that with my boy. Try and keep him off the foot. No, walks except on leash and only to do what he has to do. Horse wrap will hold pressure on the foot. You can use corn starch and gauze, hold it on with the horse wrap, you can even cover it all with a sock. It shouldn't bleed through that ciao

Is horse wrap like vet wrap? The coban I use is pretty much the same.. its a self adhesive wrap.
Part of the problem seems to be that we have alot of steps going down into our yard from the back porch and he's such a drama queen that he's trying to hobble on three legs because of the wrap and he ends up stumbling and making it worse. I'm probably going to carry him down ugh.. he's 50lbs so not exactly a pocket pooch lol.

When we had to guide one of our dogs down the steps(she was arthritic), we'd stand in front of her, sort of leaning against her so she didn't trip and fall. Not sure it you are able to do the same or not.

When our dogs injure their legs (or get arthritic) and we need to help them scoot around, we use the towel under the back hips-and-lift approach. That might also help (I don't have any other advice. When Bronx cut his leg and paw up, it was bad enough to need stitches [barb wire], but it was much the same - he kept bleeding and bleeding + he roams and keeping him confined for any length of time is impossible, so we HAD to go that route).
