Hello everybody!
My name is Tessa and I am the proud mamma of my 3 sweet little carpet sharks named Ham, Biscuit and Chicken!
About me:
I just graduated with my B.S. degree in animal sciences and I am now a masters student at the University of Missouri in the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience program with an emphasis on psychology and behavior.
After I have completed my masters, I plan on pursuing my PhD in animal sciences, focusing on animal health/wellbeing/welfare and behavior (hence why I am getting my masters in neuroscience).
My interest in research is almost all thanks to my ferret Biscuit. After being diagnosed with adrenal disease and insulinoma, I realized how little research is out there regarding ferret health and nutrition. It is my goal to one day be able to make a difference in the ferret community by finding ways to treat their all too common medical issues and help us to gain a better understanding of their overall health and needs!
About the ferrets:
As I mentioned, my sweet girl Biscuit unfortunately has insulinoma and adrenal disease. She's taken quite the beating over the years but she's the strongest little lady and continues to protect and mother her 2 brothers, Ham and Chicken.
Ham is her closely related brother (we'll just assume since they were purchased together). They were both re-homed to me a few years ago around 18 months old, and they are around 5 years old now. Ham is such a ham! He's what I like to call my sweet "old" man cause he doesn't mind just chillin in my lab while Biscuit is on the move, cleaning up all the toys that Chicken gets out.
Chicken the last ferret that was re-homed to me, after a friend of a friend was unable to house him in her apartment. Upon meeting him for the first time, he was in awful condition and quite possible would have died in a few weeks if I hadn't taken him in. The poor boy was COVERED in fleas...and I mean literally head to toe.
Since his recovery, he has brought us so much joy. He is like my little toddler. He's probably around 3-4 years old but still acts like a kit and he gets my older ones to play with him. He is SO funny, he lights up my world- they all do.
