A lot of people here use this stuff including myself. I recommended that someone use it for IBD and someone else (who probably did not research at all) jumped in and said "DO NOT use mushrooms because ALL mushrooms are poisonous to ferrets"
Has anyone here ever had any bad experiences ? I read as much as I could find on reishi and I would not give it to my ferret if I thought it was bad or read anything negative about it.

I know that certain types of wild mushrooms are toxic to dogs and cats (not sure about ferrets, but I find toxic things to dogs and cats are usually toxic to ferrets too), but that be said not all mushrooms are toxic, it just depends on the variety. Here's what the ASPCA has to say about it: www.aspca.org/Pet-care/ask-the-expert/ask-the-expert-poison-control/mushrooms.aspx Unfortunately it doesn't state WHICH types of wild mushrooms are toxic. This site says that Reishi mushrooms have blood thinning effects in cats: www.ehow.com/facts_5452908_toxic-herbs-cats.htmlNot sure about ferrets though... hmm... hopefully someone who knows more will chime in

Reishi has an anti inflammatory effect, which is why it really helps flare ups with IBD. It also has some anti cancer effects, as well as an antihistamine effect, which is why it helps with mast cell tumors.

I'm pretty sure medicinal mushrooms are different than the wild mushrooms that are toxic (to humans, too!). My four get a medicinal mushroom supplement made for pets...not only do they love the stuff, but Pandora (my girl with a chicken sensitivity) can eat chicken with no problems now (when before, she would either barf or have diarrhea right after eating it)

I want to say someone here was using MUSH (recommended by a holistic vet), but I can't remember who I use this one (the one for immunity): www.petsuperfood.com/

I give Koda Reishi quite regularly and have NO complaints and only saw benefits from it.

I've been using reishi on my brats for over 3 years now. The'yre kicking butt at over 6 years of age. My holistic vet approve of using it as a regular supplement. I'me the one who "discovered" that reishi works on mast cell tumors - I found this out by accident. And then I read that reishi has anti-histamine properties. Other's on the forum have found the same results. I think EVERYTHING is toxic to some degree. -jennifer

It depends on if you get the capsules or a powder form (like what I give my guys).
Jennifer gives her four 1 capsule a day (the powder poured out and mixed in their food). So, 1/4 capsule per ferret per day. She recommended both New Chapter and Host Defense (Fungi Perfecti).
Now, if you get either MUSH or Organic Pet Superfood Immunity, I give 1/8 tsp per day for my four (split between two meals added to their food). I wouldn't recommend either of these brands to ferrets who have insulinoma (or are at high risk for it) because they both have maitake (which can lower blood sugar).

I had a very rare problem with my Maisey having an allergic reaction to it. I have children's Benadryl on hand, luckily. The likely benefits are worth it, however, in the unlikely event there is a problem look for itchiness, especially around the neck area, redness around the eyes, nose and mouth. I never expected a problem so I used the recommended dose, in hindsight I should have tried a smaller increment to test for sensitivity.
