Wow, that's quite a trip. I don't think it would be save to have her lose in the car with me. I've had one escape a carrier before and start climbing around my feet and around the peddles while driving. Thankfully I managed to pull over but I don't want to risk repeating that. Especially on the highway. There's not enough room in the passenger seat so her cage has to go in the back seat where I can't reach over to stop her from chewing. I might be able to get someone to come with me.

Nibbles is back from the specialist. She does have insulinoma but she is responding well to the medication.

Great! If you get it under control there isn’t much quality of life difference.

Good news. Pred is cheap and easy. Nibbles is so cute.

Thank you. I hope that this will last and pred will be all that she needs for a long time. While there I also found out that Nibbles has cataracts which while surprising, does explain a lot. Sometimes when running around she would run straight into things and I just thought she wasn't paying attention. Other times she would stop and stare when walking into a new room where someone was moving around or if someone suddenly walked in. Sometimes she'd crane her head around and other times just stand there. She'd even do this with me sometimes. I thought that she was zoning out rather than realizing that she can't see well. Most of the time though she showed no signs of vision issues. She still runs around boldly and fast without issues. I guess that all of her other senses have well compensated.

I discovered MOe had cataracts the first time I saw him bump into a wall, and by then his vision was about gone. He had already mapped out our home and our walking route outdoors to our mailbox. Once we determined he was blind, we tried to keep our furniture in the same place, but you would be amazed how a critter can adapt and learn. We lived very close to a man made pond in FL. Our route took us along the edge of the pond. Once walking home, MOe walked straight into the pond (on a leash) and swam about 30 ft along the shore and came out of the water just where the front door was like he was on dry ground. It was so cool. His vision was all but gone then but he knew exactly where he was because we had walked it before.

It is amazing how they adapt but I guess since they're built for hunting underground it would make sense that they could navigate so well without vision. I might never would have known it if I hadn't been told. I feel silly now but I guess with having another much older ferret who went blind and acting different in contrast made me even more prone to missing it. I'm going to be more careful with Nibbles now but from the way she acted it seems like she'll get along fine.

Excelent point about hunting underground. Then we have Precious, my Trash Kat. she was the "neighborhood kat" I thought, but was left behind by at least 3 families. I tried for 3 years to get her come inside, but she refused, even when temps were in the teens. Then she loses most of her vision and now she's indoors. It took her a couple days to learn the layout. she now uses a litter box, and canknows where her food and water are and will track me around the house.

It's good to know that she won't be bothered all that much by it. Snowball is much more cautious on how she moves around which made realizing the issue much easier. They both have very different personalities though. Precious sounds like an awesome cat.
