So i have had my ferrets for about two months now. I switched them immediately from Marshells to a better kibble while I researched the raw diet (im about to start their transition). About three weeks ago either their urine or feces has started to smell terrible. I dont mind their ferret musk but whatever this smell is it is horrible. As in i know when they have gone to the bathroom somewhere they shouldn't have because I can smell it. I did add a third ferret around the time the smell started so I dont know if its him or the food I switched them to. Will the smell go away when I transition them to raw or could something be medically wrong for the urine or feces to be smelling this bad?

Is it fish based? someone said fish based kibbles make feces smell--- I do not know though. Now I did have some bacteria overload with my older ferretswhen i transitioned---but got them antibiotics---this will be diarrhea and really bad smell. stool specimen by vet verified the diagnosis.
Can you separate them to see which one it is? Like put one in the cage at night and let other lose in room?
Also it could be the kibble. Maybe it is richer or something. I think people kind of do a mix for a while lessening the old food. But then again new fella maybe sick. Yeah you may have to separate to see who it is.

infections can cause strong urine odor. I would tend to suspect the new one, but it would be helpful to isolate the one. At the same time, infections can spread. You might want to get a UA (urinalysis)) for all 3 of you can to be safe.
