Hey guys. I bred my sable jill ferret with my hob European Polecat and my jill had one stillbirth around 5 hours ago now, she hasn't had any more, yet.. not sure what to do? she still feels rather heavy, or at least heavier than she was before she got pregnant. It's 1:49am, been staying up to see if she has any more but feeling tired. The one she had was relatively big in my opinion, not at all small. Looks like it had fur on it too?? I thought most kits don't get fur for the first few hours to at least 24 hours after birth?? Should I take my jill to a vet due to the stillbirth and uncertainty of others coming?

definitely go to vet. if she has more that are delayed it could be a major threat to her life.

Hey again. So I took my jill to the vets this morning around 11am (about almost 3 hours ago) and they x-rayed her, cost me £125 + £25 consultation (£10 discount) and the results are; there were no sign of any other kits.. Not sure if I consider that a good thing, as it means she won't die from not giving birth, or a bad thing because it was only one and that it was stillborn

I'm just glad she's ok. Breeding ferrets is too stressful for us. We had a member here who is in UK and she had a webcam for her jills so we could follow them from breeding till re-homing the kits. There was a lot of fun, but a lot of drama and tragedy live online as well. There were over 1000 users on her websiteand we all sat here feeling helpless a few times. Was this your first attempt? What kind of temperament does your poley have? Just curious. I'm sorry it didn't work out this time but at least your jill and hob are ok.

Kind of indifferent about how I feel about the outcome, making me wonder whether I really should be trying again.. My Eu is pretty well behaved, though sometimes boistress but if I give him a firm "oi!" he stops what he's doing, most of the time. However, he has had hold of me pretty bad from time to time. So bad I felt like my hand hand been hit with a hammer.. He has improved over the past few months however.

Me too. Though was a pricey way to find out. Needless to say I've never had to pay so much on an animal, not even my horses lol x.x

First litters are the most risky. I'm not a breeder but passing on lessons learned from others. If you don't plan on trying again you can jill jab annually or get her altered, as I guess you know. We would have loved to raise a litter but the risks outweighed the benefits, esp since we didn't have any local ferret friends.

I was told that it only works during the time they're in season so I thought it was twice a year. However, I bought the hob specifically so I didn't have to keep paying for that. Not to mention; long term can cause more harm than good. Also, it's not whether I plan on trying again but I was distraught when this happened and don't want it happening again so... yeah. Not to mention I am concerned about risks outweighing the benefits, as you said so I can agree to that point of view. Thinking I might see how it goes next time and should anything go wrong, even such as rehoming? I certainly won't want it happen again.
