My 10 month old Male intact Ferret (Fergus) was at the vet Saturday. He was off form on Friday and just wanted to lie in the garden where usually he is running around never stopping still. He was the same yesterday so I brought him to the vet. His temperature was 41 C so they gave him an antibiotic via the vein and also took bloods. His sugar levels were low, and the blood count rules out an auto immune problem. The vet reckons it's a chest infection and didn't warrant being kept in so sent me home with a steroid tablet and antibiotic in liquid form. Started them yesterday morning and have 2 more days to go. He will only eat off my fingers. He is pooping but it's not always solid ( I had given liquid paraffin Saturday before I went to the vet) Just wondering if this is something anyone has come across before and if so is there anything else I can do form him, as although he hasn't gone down hill, he hasn't improved much either. He is very lethargic
Marbocyl is the antibiotic he is on and Prednisone the steroid. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

sorry he's poorly. It may take a doy or two to see improvement. I've not ever used marbocyl, being on the other side of the pond, but usually when we get antibiotics they run for 10 days. Maybe the marbocyl is stronger?his sugars coulb e low from not eating. 10 months is too young for insulinoma, esp if he eats right. I don't know what else you can do. If he doesn't improve by the time his meds run out you can try another antibiotic. Hope he's better soon.

Thanks for that. Due to him not taking food off my fingers this morning I contacted the Vet and dropped him back up there, where he is now on a drip. He had lost weight since Saturday and needed re hydrating. Hoping that like as you say it will take a day or 2 to see any improvement.

Vet ran full bloods and his white cell count in extremely elevated. His blood sugars are now very high and he is not responding to the drip. Trying another antibiotic, but tonight will be very telling. He is a tough youn lad, and hope he has enough in him to fight off whatever is causing this.

Got through the night, but still very lethargic, on 2 antibitoics now every 12 hours. Temperature is up which I'm told is a good sign, as if it dropped it would mean he was on the way out.

Had to make the final act of kindness yesterday at 3 PM. Absolutely gutted. Fergus and his brother are my first ever Ferrets after wanting them for over 30 years....He brought so much JOY into my life and I will never forget that. I laid him to rest this afternoon in my back yard. His brother Frank is fine at the moment, and I don't want to sound insincere, but am on the look out for another Hob this season as Frank will need a playmate. Is there anything I can do short term to make sure Frank is OK ? Thank for you thoughts, it means a lot.

Man, I am really sorry it came to that. So young... All I can suggest is try to spend extra time playing with Frank if he will do that with you. Some ferrets are more sensitive to losing cage mates than others. I hope Frank is ok till he get a new roomie. DIP Fergus. You broke the ice and set the standard.

Oh! How disappointing, it’s terrible when they are young to have to go through this. Rest in peace Fergus. I agree that just spending time playing with Frank is the best thing you can do.

Thanks so much for your kind words. Frank is doing well, seems a lot more active these last few days but is a bit clingy. Have my name down for a hob due date 4th May. It's a cross between an EU Polecat and a BEW. If the Jill is not pregnant I will get a straight EU. Nothing will replace Fergus, he certainly was a one off, and if I had only one word to describe him it would have been Ballsy....he used to look at me at times and I'm sure he was thinking "I could have you, easy " Frank certainly made me laugh this weekend as he got VERY acrobatic in his court, making jumps he wouldn't have dreamt of a few weeks ago. Thanks again, only for Fergus I wouldn't have come across this fantastic resource.

I'm glad that Frank is getting on ok. Fergus sounds like our Scamp. Scamp was a flat out kook, endless energy and curiosity. Most ferrets sleep 20 hrs a day, he slept 8. I could tell many stories about his short 30 month life.
