Edit: I think I've figured it out now, but correct me if I'm wrong on this.
So between both of my boys they eat around 10oz daily, but I usually make a little bit more food for them because sometimes they eat more. So this is what I made today:
11.7oz of grinds,
1.17oz of heart,
about .3oz of liver and .3oz of kidney (To be exact I took 2.5% liver and 2.5% kidney. So 2.5% of 11.7oz is 0.2925oz)
I wasn't exactly sure how to figure out how much bonemeal powder I'd need to add so I did approximately 1/2 tsp of bonemeal.
Let me know what you all think of this please! Have I done all of the math correctly? Should I change anything at all?
(Read the info below to know why I'm doing this, the grinds are an 80/10/10 without heart)
Hello everyone, I am currently feeding my 2 boys grinds from Rawfedk9.com ( rawfedk9.com )
Their grinds do not contain heart so I've been adding 10% heart to their diet. A few people told me that this would slightly throw off the balance so I could add 10% liver & kidney and 10% bonemeal powder to help balance it out. But then I had a few other people tell me that this isn't okay to do. So I am a bit confused now. I keep hearing conflicting things about ferret diet and it seems like there's no definitive answer on what's okay to feed and what isn't. Which is why I came here for help.
For a bit of context on my situation, I lost my job due to covid and so I am currently living with my parents. I want to get a deep freezer for my babies, but I currently cannot as my parents don't want me to and it's their house so I have to respect that. I'm grateful that they even allowed me to stay in the first place so I don't want to push it. I'd love to order from other online providers such as Hare Today or My Pet Carnivore, but the shipping is just too expensive for me where I live and since I can't order in bulk right now I'm not sure it's worth it. I'd be spending more on shipping than on the actual food.
There are a few places in town I can source meats, there's 2 local butchers in town and a small co-op that I can get organs and heart from. But the only bone-in meat I can get is chicken. And I know they need more variety than that so I went with Rawfedk9 because they have free shipping in the USA, their prices are pretty reasonable, and they have a large variety of meats to choose from. I could also travel to get more variety but I'm not sure how well that will work for me in the upcoming months because I'll have to travel often due to not being able to buy in bulk. And traveling is just not something I'd like to be doing often, especially with covid right now. I know cases have gone down but I have to be very careful because my dad is very immunocompromised. I live in a place where it snows a lot in the winter and the interstate is often closed as well.
What I'm trying to say is that its going to be a hassle for me to do this and I'm worried I may not be able to travel sometimes in the winter. Grinds seem to be a much easier option for me right now, but if I can't balance them correctly then I can't feed them. I'm just looking for help on how to balance them out better.
Rawfedk9 has 4 different recipes that they use for their grinds and you get to choose which one you want when you order. Their main recipe "The original", "The Variety, and "The Select" only use beef bone and organs in all of their mixes, but you can choose which protein you want for the muscle meat. They have one other mix called "The Whole Prey" and you can get turkey, beef, and pork (and bison when its in stock) with this one and it sources all of the ingredients from the same animal. (i.e. uses only pork muscle, bone, and organs for the pork recipe).
I can get a variety of organs and heart in my town from my local co-op and butchers. Beef, pork, goat, lamb, and bison are the main ones I've found. I can also get chicken liver and heart at Walmart. Basically I'm wondering how I can get a better variety of organs into my babies diet while feeding the grinds. Can I add extra organs and bonemeal? I already have to add the heart so that adds 10% muscle meat already. No matter which option I choose, to keep the grinds or to try frankenprey, its going to be a hassle for me. But I am okay with trying to balance out the grinds and do the math I just need to know how I can do that. If I'm doing anything wrong please let me know. Any help or tips is greatly appreciated! Thank you all so much.
