She is absolutely adorable. I hope she's able to bring a lot of diversity to the black-footed ferret gene pool!

It's my opinion that the ferret pictured is not a BFF. It does not surprise me that the new york times would take a shortcut and post the first pic of a ferret kit they found on google. Here is a link to a BFF cam by the US Fish and Wildlife Service where they breed BFFs in captivity with intention to place them in the wild. I have followed this and another BFF cam thru an entire breeding season, and the kits look like adult BFFs. The ferret pictured in the article looks like a domestic ferret to me. I'm sorry it took a couple days to post a follow up, but the article does report on an advance in BFF recovery.

Yeah, I didn't think the pic of the first ferret was a BFF, it looked like a sable ferret. But the ferret on the scale does look different. Still, a very cute ferret!!

looking again I take it back. The kit on the scale is genuine, for sure. The one in the first pic and the one being held have rounded heads, and that and the coloring in the first are what I judged on. BFFs have black noses, and all the ferrets in the article do, so I will retract my post and shut up.

The ferret in the hole is definitely is a black footed ferret. The ears are really set back and down more. The ferret wriggling around is hard to say because the ears look more up like a domestic ferret but the one on the scale looks like the one in the hole with the ears set back and down more. That's just my observation anyways. lol
