Hi there. My 3 month old kit has been extremely well-behaved within normal since I got him, but today we've been having a rough time. I brought home a new litter (walnut) and but a little at the bottom of his litter box with his regular (yesterday's news) on top. He dug (normal) but I put the grate that came with the litter box over top to discourage this.
The issue is, he has a sudden fascination with aggressively chewing holes in the bag that the litter comes in, as well as the old bag of litter. I don't want to encourage this behavior especially since the walnut crumbles have now been cast everywhere with all the holes in the bag. I had to put the damaged bag inside another bag.
I put him in the sin bin when he did it, but he repeatedly goes right back to it when I let him out and it's becoming harder to separate him from the bag, and he's bitten my hand once now fairly hard. It's swollen.
I've had 3 young ferrets in the past and I've never experienced anything like this.
Please help... What do I do?
I want to be a good ferret mom and I don't want him to hate me and bite me
Thanks guys

I keep bags in the top shelf of my closet, way out of reach. She has the entire living room to play in, and I keep absolutely everything she could dig or chew holes in out of the way. If no closets, do you have wall-shelves? I've been meaning to install a few in my living room so I can put decorations up that she can't reach - that might help with your bag problem!

I don't really have any wall shelves :c Although I've been meaning to clean the coat closet so that there is shelf space there. Maybe that'll be my project tomorrow! Such a simple solution LOL I feel silly for not thinking of that! 😂

Don't feel silly! Sometimes ferrets get into all kinda crazy shenanigans, that sometimes ferret-proofing is overthought when a solution is simple (for once!) Haha. Yeah I have no wall-shelves yet either, but I miss all my decorations in my house, including fake plants, so that's a project I've had on the backburner that I figured I'd suggest. I can't wait to set it up sometime lol!

Hey there. I had that problem with Scamp, so I decided to put an open 40 lb bag of wood pellet litter in my closet. Scamp obsessed over doors and would often get to a door before i did. One time I left the closet door open... IMG_0759 by unclejoe1158, on Flickr the hole in the bag was just big enough to pour, and he dug out every last pellet.

That must've been so frustrating holy smokes... Yea I think I'll definitely put the bag on the top shelf in the closet after seeing that 😅
