My ferret, fella, has lost a bunch of weight and is extremely skinny. He has had diarrhea and not a lot of energy. He can still walk and play for a little while. Maybe 5 minutes of play time. He still is eating and drinking water. The feces are black and runny. I took him to the vet and they said it’s either lymphoma or IBD but they didn’t do any tests to confirm. I was wondering if there were any other suggestions. Should I get a second opinion from another vet or what? They prescribed prednisone and a cancer type of liquid that I don’t remember the name of. He is about 5-6 years old. Any advice or knowledge would be great. Thank you!

I would get a second opinion from a ferret specialist with an ultrasound test for tumors, and a fecal sample.

The weird thing is that he has energy still. He wants to play but gets worn out super easy. We’re not sure what to do. We are thinking of going to the vet tomorrow and see what they say. We are contemplating putting him down to make sure he doesn’t suffer anymore. We’re at a loss...

Did they do any blood tests, like blood glucose? insulinoma can cause weakness in the rear, but there is a for of lymphoma that is very aggressive and fast. We've lost 2 ferrets to it, and with Pandy, it did paralyze her back legs. I would try a different vet before making the final decision.

We’re going to the vet today. We will listen to the options we have available and see what the best decision for quality of life is. His rear legs are pretty much non functional and is defecating on himself if we do not help him. I will update this when we decide what we will do...

It sounds like there’s a chance it might be insulinoma and if it were me I would get a blood test for him and see if that brings any light to the situation. If it is insulinoma he might still have years left of his life with the correct treatment.
