Hi everyone! I hope I am posting this in the right place. My name is Kalika and I have two babies their names are Olive and Nellie. I haven't had a ferret since I was a kid so this is basically all new to me. I remember very little from them. I did a lot of research but did not hear about raw diets until I joined the ferret education group on facebook. Anything I can do to keep my babies happy and healthy. As of right now, if anyone with ferret experience has tips and tricks or suggestions on anything lemme hear it! Olive loves going on walks but Nellie is still too small to fit into either of the harnesses I have. I love them both so much and I can't wait to get to know all of you and learn more!

Hi there! My number one tip/trick is salmon oil. It’s a strong scent and flavour that covers up other things the ferret might not be sure about putting in their mouth. It can also be used to keep them still during nail trims. Not every ferret likes it, but when they do it’s a godsend.

Hello Kalika, welcome to the forum! 😊 You are definitely in the right place to learn more about your fuzzies! A good place to start would be to check out "New to Ferrets? Read the Random Ferret F.A.Q.!" It's a pinned thread right here on this board. I think it does a great job of laying the foundation of knowledge that you can then build upon with further research. Here's the link to the thread: holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/14619/new-ferrets-read-random-ferretI hope that helps!

Hi Kalika, welcome to the forum. I would also suggest getting your carpet sharks used to salmon oil early on. It takes a while for them to get to like it, but does keep them happy and still whilst trimming nails. Ask questions and people will answer, and remember that there's no such thing as a silly question around here.
Cheers

Hello and welcome to the group! My #1 concern is ferret-proofing. And if your guys are free roaming, check behind you every time you got outside so they don't follow you.

Thank you everyone for your tips!! About this salmon oil- what exactly might I put it on? For the person who said it is helpful during nail trimming- how often should their nails be trimmed? What kind of nail trimmer should I get to be able to do this? Do I put the salmon oil like on my finger and let them lick it off while I trim the nails?? All of your tips were so helpful, thank you!

Put the salmon oil on their bellies, that should keep them occupied long enough for you to trim their nails (I use it and it works like a charm!). I trim my ferrets' nails about every 2-3 weeks, and I use a pair of clippers I got in a grooming kit for small animals. I think I bought it at one of the chain pet stores. Some people use cat nail clippers, but I find that I can see what I'm doing more easily with the ones I have. Be careful not to hit their quicks! Thankfully they are easy to see, and with practice you'll know exactly where to stop. If you're uncomfortable cutting their nails initially, you can have your exotic vet show you how.

Yes, squirt a little right on the belly and they’ll double over licking it out of their fur. I trim once a month and use human nail clippers turned sideways, I tried guillotine style animal nail trimmers but didn’t have as good a cut.

I think safety is important too. I always check the back of dishwasher. I thought one morning--- not a creature was stirring not even a mouse when I happened to put a stray cup in the dishwasher to find my Annabelle in there. She was wet as the dishwasher had recently been turned on. Thankfully, I did not heat up water at the faucet. I always thank the good Lord for finding her. Also someone was devastated to find they had washed their ferret with clothes, so picking up each individual piece by edge before dropping them in washer is what someone said they do. I follow that instruction now. Here is ferret safety tips holisticferretforum.com/care-and-enrichment/ferret-proofing-and-safety/
