So I got the fecal results back for the latest addition to my business, and she apparently has a "small amount" of the Giardia parasite (she is already in quarantine, so this is not an issue for my other ferrets), so the vet called in a prescription for compounded Metro. I'm unfortunately familiar with this terrible medication because I had to give it to Finn a couple of years ago for a stomach bug, and I remember that the experience was awful. Most of the meds ended up on me because he would just spit it back out... Does anyone have any advice on giving difficult medication? How do I make this experience at least tolerable for her? I've heard that mixing it with a treat does nothing to disguise the bitter taste. I tried that with Finn, and it seemed to make no difference whatsoever.

You could try sucking up the flagyl and then a little oil to take the edge off. I put the syringe in the side of the mouth and squirt toward the side/back of the mouth, and hold the syringe in place until the fert swallows a time or two. Never a joy but you waste less if you can get it to work. My wife just scruffs and squirts.

The compounding pharmacy called and asked which flavoring I wanted for the medication... I went with molasses in the hope that something sweet might counteract the bitterness even just a little. I'll be picking up the meds tomorrow. Wish us luck!

Okay, so Scarlett just had her first dose of the Metro with molasses flavoring, and it went amazingly! No spitting or pawing at her face, no freaking out whatsoever. There was only some slight drooling when the aftertaste hit her. Overall, I would call it a success!
