Hi, my name is Andy. I’m engaged to Nancy. We are the proud owners of our first ferret, a cinnamon male named Bodie, who is about 4 months old. Nancy and I, get such a kick out of him. He totally cracks us up when he plays, and usually gets free roam of our bathroom or master bedroom for playtimes throughout the day. He doesn’t totally get free roam of the whole apartment yet, because he still sometimes still has accidents right by the litter box or near it, just not in it. He’s great in his cage (Midwest ferret nation/critter nation duplex cage), he goes most of the time in the litter boxes. The other day though, Bodie went a couple inches in front of the litter box. So, I saw a video on youtube where a guy blocked off the top half of the cage for a week so his two ferrets could get the idea too always use the litter boxes. So we blocked off the bottom half of ours, until next Sunday. In the bedroom or bathroom we use three corner litter boxes. We also always leave some poop in the one in the two in his cage and at least one of the three in whatever room he’s getting free roam.
I’ve got him trained with treats, to come when called, beg on his hind legs, sit, and roll over. He's still a little nippy when playing, which I know is normal. When he falls asleep in our arms it’s so cute. He also starts licking my arm, but sometimes gets carried away and bites it after awhile, which he either gets a timeout or scruff him and a stern no bite. I have to say when he sleeps, I just wish I could sleep that way. He’s so relaxed and in the funniest positions!
Oh, and we have two dogs, Wylie and Norman. Norman is Nancy‘s 8 yr. old Pomeranian. Wylie is my 7yr. Old white English Labrador Retriever. The ferret tries to bite or jump on the dogs. Wylie and the ferret don’t really do well together, Wylie just tolerates him, but was bit pretty hard by the ferret in the back of his front leg and he mouthed the ferret. I can show Bodie to him from the rear end of the ferret and Wylie just sniffs him, but from nose to nose both the dog and ferret act out. So not sure how to get them to get along. So can use some help on that. Bodie jumps and tries to nip Norman as well, so we separate them as well. Norman likes to watch the ferret play and checks on him in the cage and they sniff each other. We just don’t want the dogs to get hurt or the ferret. That’s pretty much it, love owning a ferret and they really are quite the characters. Thanks everyone, hope to learn more. Andy
